AP English Language and Composition

Please follow the below directions. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Ben Everson or Mr. Shawn Jaworski.

Part 1: On your own, do some reading (books at the library or reputable online sources) to introduce or remind you of the meaning of the concept of “The American Dream.” While not exactly research, this should definitely take longer than just a few minutes.

Part 2: Read the entirety of Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, which you can check out from the Skyline English department, find at your local library, or purchase* for yourself.

Part 3: Write a 2-3 page essay that describes what Steinbeck is saying about The American Dream through this novel.

HINT: Show us that you know how to write a well-organized academic essay that takes a position and proves it through the use of textual evidence. We are far more interested in YOUR OWN thoughts on the matter than your ability to regurgitate someone else's. If we determine that you used Spark Notes, Cliff's Notes, Wikipedia, or some other aid, you will fail this first assignment.

NOTE: Please bring your completed essay and your copy of the novel with you on the first day of school.

*This class's fee (no more than $30) is distributed throughout the year by students having to purchase some of their own books. If you can not purchase a book, though, please check it out from a local library and make sure you take extensive notes, since we will be referring back to the information from this book over the year. If you're reading this before May 25, you can check out a copy from Mr. Everson or Mr. Jaworski.
