College Reading: Course Description
Instructor: Carrie Mitchell
College Reading is a course designed for college-bound students who have complete their required English courses through and including English 11 or the equivalent. This course will provide opportunities for students to increase reading comprehension and speed via a close examination of a wide variety of reading materials including fiction, poetry, articles, essays and textbooks, and students will engage in a wide array of activities to increase their vocabularies. In general, this is a technical reading class that will enable students to understand and gain skills in the kids of reading they will do in their college courses.
The primary text for this class is Ten Steps to Advancing College Reading Skills, Third Edition, by John Langan. Supplemental texts and books will also be used, including Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom and Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer.
Absences, both excused and unexcused, may have a negative effect on students’ grades and should therefore be avoided. Students who must miss class should see me before the next class meeting to get caught up. Tardies result in a loss of five points per day.
Grades are available online for both parents and students and information will be provided to all as it becomes available.
Homework can be expected nightly. Tests, quizzes and other assessments are given periodically to monitor student progress.
Students who fall behind on classwork or homework assignments will be referred to the school’s Homework Club to get caught up and those who miss tests/quizzes will be referred there to do makeups.
Students are encouraged to get extra help from me as needed. I am often available before and after school and lunches.
The best way to reach me is through the email address above. And please consult my webpage through www.goerietigers.com, ACADEMICS, ENGLISH for lots more information.
