The Colorado Department of Education defines Gifted and Talented as the following:

"Gifted and talented children" means those persons between the ages of five and twenty-one whose abilities, talents, and potential for accomplishment are so exceptional or developmentally advanced that they require special provisions to meet their educational programming needs. Children under five who are gifted may also be provided with early childhood special educational services.

Gifted students include gifted students with disabilities (i.e. twice-exceptional) and students with exceptional abilities or potential from all socio-economic and ethnic, cultural populations. Gifted students are capable of high performance, exceptional production, or exceptional learning behavior by virtue of any or a combination of giftedness.

Erie High School is committed to meeting the unique and varying needs of gifted students in an ideal manner. Students will receive various beneficial services with the purpose of personalizing learning for each student. Services may include one or more of the following:

  • Individual Consultation with Gifted Education Specialists

  • Curriculum Enrichment Opportunities

  • Academic Competition Involvement Opportunities

  • Small Group Meetings

  • Post High-School Planning Experiences

  • Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) Goals

In addition to the above, general education teachers will receive consultation opportunities with gifted education specialists in order to meet the gifted needs of students in the general education setting. Gifted education specialists can also provide training for school staff in meeting the needs of gifted students including differentiating instruction, assisting underachieving students, providing enrichment opportunities in class, as well as supporting students’ social and emotional needs.
