The word of the day is LEAD.

What if leading your business was like coaching basketball? Guess what?  It is!  So, let me ask you a question. Would you, at any time, vacate your position as coach to go out on the court and play with the team?  Heck no!  Yet, I run into business owners who do it all the time.  And to be perfectly honest, I was doing it too until recently!

I was hiring people to do a job and helping them do their jobs at the same time!  I'm not alone!  For I, like many, started my business to do what I loved or was skilled to do...on my own terms.

You loved baking cakes and turned it into a business.  You did bookkeeping and turned it into a business. And it's great!  You're doing your own thing your own way! Customers are calling and you're rocking and rolling.  Then, something happens.  The customer orders pick up. And with that, the paperwork picks up. Everything picks up! Oh no!  If you remain stuck in a DIY mentality guess what?  Things start to unravel.  You can't keep all the balls up in the air!  Calgon take me away!

No!  Hold up Calgon!  It's not a problem!  It simply means you need to lose your DIY passenger mentality, climb up in the drivers seat and LEAD. What is needed is leadership!

The moral of this story is this.  You can't coach and play.  I know you LOVE the game but you have to shift.  I know that coaching is not as sexy as playing but you have to shift.  I know your face isn't on a cereal box but you have to shift. You have to lead! If you don't, you don't have a prayer of winning the game. And, in business and sports, when you don't win the game, the franchise suffers.

It's taken me 7 almost 8 years to get it. You see, I thought I could coach the game and play in the game at the same time. I thought I could run my business and help take care of my clients' businesses at the same time. It took a while but I now understand that my greatest gift to my business and theirs is my leadership. I am a woman of vision and tenacity: a beast at anticipating and meeting needs, coming up with solutions and strategies, finding and engaging top notch talent and fostering a camaraderie of trust, respect and appreciation of those in my employ. This is who I am as a leader. Find out who you are as a leader and LEAD!
