Ryan Siemers is Associate Professor of English at Southern Utah University. Born in Billings, Montana, he earned his PhD in English from the University of Utah in 2018.Â
His research interests include the history of the novel, religion and literature, and secularization theory. His book project, tentatively titled Falling Back on Faith: The Confessional Subject and the Modern Novel, examines the history of the novel as it relates to the secularization of the sacrament of penance. His work appears in The Journal of Narrative Theory, Religion & Literature, and Modern Drama.
He teaches upper-division English courses such as Major Authors (focusing on one or two important writers per semester) and the survey of British literature after 1830 (Brit Lit III). His lower-division courses include Introduction to Literature, Introduction to Critical Theory, and a second-year composition course (ENGL 2010) focused on the relationship between science and religion.
Nationally, he served as President of the American Religion and Literature Society, a member society of the American Literature Association, from 2019 to 2022. He currently serves as Treasurer.
