Mission Statement

The Southern Utah University Investment Group is a practicum designed to prepare students for careers in finance by providing them with the opportunity to apply in the markets what they have learned in the classroom.  Students direct the investments with considerable independence.  Advisors foster an atmosphere of debate, competition, responsibility, and accountability.

Actively Managed Portfolios

SUU Endowment:
From 01/01/21 to 05/20/21
+4.38% (Annualized Return: +11.73%)

DA Davidson:
From 09/01/2020 to 05/20/2021

The ISG manages both the D.A. Davidson fund ($50,000) and a portion of the SUU Endowment ($100,000). Scholars and mentors meet regularly in the Steven Harrop Investment Lab to discuss and debate investment strategy.

The Endowment's manager, Soltis, generously carved out a small piece of the endowment so that students could make investment decisions that reflect the need for both asset preservation and prudent growth.

DA Davidson allocates $50,000 to 20 universities around the country.  DA Davidson generously shares trading profits with programs which produce in excess of a stated threshold.  This year, we plan to put some money in the bank!  At the start of the academic year, ISG was divided into three competing teams: value, growth, and momentum.  The challenge is to outperform a comparable benchmark by the largest margin.

The Growth team searches for the next big winner.

The Momentum team works to control risk.

The Value team searches for the next great bargain.

CFA Research Challenge

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis.  Students work in teams to research and analyze a publicly traded company chosen by the CFA. Each team writes a detailed research report on the company with a buy, sell, or hold recommendation and may be asked to present and defend their analysis to a panel of industry professionals. The SUU 2020 CFA Research Team finished in the top 5 in Utah.

Student Managed Investment Fund Consortium (SMIFC)

In 2019, SUU sent a team to Chicago to compete in the annual SMIFC competition.  Teams from universities from all over the country submitted a paper in which they detailed the construction of an equity portfolio consisting of at least 10 stocks.  The team chose a top-down, sector rotation approach.  In the paper portion of the competition, SUU won first place!  Unfortunately, SMIFC 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Career Exploration Trips

Once a year, a career exploration trip will be planned. The goal is to meet with individuals and companies in order to network, learn more about internships and careers, and market themselves to potential employers.
Past years we have visited New York City, Seattle, Portland, and Salt Lake City. We will strategically plan where and with whom we will visit.
