Welcome!

Welcome to yet another school year and especially welcome to kindergarten!  My name is Lydia Stewart and I will be your child's kindergarten teacher this year.  The classroom number is room CR-06.  I am very excited to be working with your child this year!  I will offer nothing but the best instruction for your child.  Currently, I hold an Associate's Degree in Social Science with Education Focus from Thomas Nelson Community College, a Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Instruction PreK-6 from Old Dominion University, having graduated summa cum laude, and a Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Instruction PreK-6 with Teacher Licensure from Old Dominion University, also graduating summa cum laude.
I will teach your child reading, kid writing, math, science, and social studies.  Kindergarteners will learn about so many interesting and exciting things!  What we will learn about and what I will teach is dictated by the Virginia Department of Education.  In social studies we will learn about citizenship, U.S. symbols, and maps.  In science we will learn about senses, shadows, and magnets.  Math will be enjoyable too as we learn number sense, how to measure objects, and how to use addition and subtraction.  During reading, students will learn letter sounds, diagraphs, and sight words, and how to use all of these to learn to read.  During kid writing we will learn how to apply concept of word to our writings, spelling, and how to express in words what we see in a picture.  Your child will also participate in exciting electives: Music, Art, Library, and P.E/gym!  P.E. teachers are asking that students wear tennis shoes/sneakers to school on gym days; otherwise your child might not participate in gym if they do not have the appropriate foot wear. (We have P.E. EVER Tuesday and Thursday AND EVERY OTHER Monday).  There are so many different areas to learn in, I know we will have a lot of fun this year!  There are even several field trips throughout the year as well! In our classroom we will have a wonderful assistant that will be working with your child.  This is the first year I have the please and privilege to work with Ms. Godette.  She is moving up from Pre-K to help us out in kindergarten!  Some of our students are already familiar with her and I believe this will help make the transition to kindergarten easier for them.  She is a valuable resource to our class and to your child's academic success!  Partnered together, I know your child will grow and succeed academically as we have a fun and learning filled year!  Your child's self confidence, curiosity, and self-responsibility will also grow.  Thank you in advance for your support as we begin this school year, and together make it one of the best for your child!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lydia K. Stewart
