Welcome to the Sumner School District Speech Language Resource page!  Our goal for this site is to provide parents and teachers with communication information and resources.    Each school in the Sumner School District has a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) and several have Speech Language Pathology Assistants (SLPA) as well.

School based speech and language services provided by SLPs fall under the regulations of special education and can include:

  • Language

  • Articulation

  • Social communication

  • Fluency

  • Vocabulary

Services can be direct work with students as well as providing communication services related to academic skills and collaboration with parents and teachers.

One common question the SLPs receive from parents and teachers is regarding consonant sound acquisition for articulation.  The sound development chart included below is a reference and if your child can not produce the sounds at the age levels listed, they may qualify for articulation services at school if there is an impact to their educational functioning.  Because articulation skills are not the only communication skills addressed by school based SLPs, you will also find information on language development, social skills, stuttering and bilingual development in the Speech and Language Development pages.

Another common question is regarding home program activities and our favorite communication apps for mobile devices. Information on these resources is also included on the site.  However, if you are looking for more in depth or more specific information, this information will not replace a conversation with your child’s Speech Language Pathologist (SLP).  Thank you for browsing our website and we look forward to communicating with you.
