TRUANCY

The District will appoint an attendance officer either for the District or may appoint the principal of each school or his/her designee as the designated attendance officer for that school.  The attendance officer shall monitor the attendance of all students.  It shall be the duty of the attendance officer to counsel with students, parents or guardians or conservators and teachers; and to investigate the causes of unexcused absences, habitual truancy and willful absenteeism.  The attendance officer will give written notice to the parent, guardian or custodian of any child having an unexcused absence that attendance of such child at school is required by law under W.S. 21-4-102 and District policy.  After a third unexcused absence, the attendance officer shall attempt to arrange a meeting with the parent, guardian or custodian of the student to discuss the absences and to explain that after five (5) unexcused absences the child will be deemed to be habitually truant.

If the attendance officer reasonably believes that the unexcused absences were due to willful absenteeism or habitual truancy, or neglect as defined in W.S. 14-3-202(a)(vii, the attendance officer shall notify the board of trustees and the district attorney, who may initiate proceedings in the interest of the child under the Child Protection Act, W.S. 14-3-401 or the Children in Need of Supervision Act, W.S. 14-6-401 as appropriate.
