Our program begins with a district-wide Sixth Grade Chorus which performs at several events throughout the year. In Junior High, students have the opportunity to participate in curricular Seventh and Eighth Grade Choirs, as well as extra-curricular opportunities such as the Chorale, honor choirs, and the musical. At the high school, students are able to participate in one of five curricular choirs, both auditioned and non-auditioned, as well as four extra-curricular jazz choirs, small ensembles, activities such as All State, and travel with the choirs. The goal of our program is to provide every student with the opportunity to learn and perform in a variety of choirs and settings, and to foster a lifelong appreciation of and support for music.
The PVHS Vocal Music Department is made up of over 240 students in five curricular ensembles:
Pleasant Valley Singers (Treble and Mixed)
There are also four extra-curricular Jazz Choirs, as well as seasonal auditioned Bass and Treble Choirs.
The groups are directed by Meg Byrne, Robert Williams, and Catherine Lyon, with accompanist Becky Seward.
All students in the program receive individual voice lessons from the three directors, as well as adjunct instructor Tom Booth.
The ensembles perform in up to 5 concerts per year, may perform at IHSMA Solo & Ensemble and Large Group Festivals, make local appearances, and sing at Graduation. All HS choir students are eligible to participate in the Choir Trip every other year.
The PVHS choirs have received many honors and recognition, including consistent Division I ratings, placement of students in Opus, ACDA, and All-State Choirs, top placements at national competitions, and making their Carnegie Hall debut in 2003.
The PVJHS vocal music department consists of over 200 students in three curricular choirs:
The 7th Grade Boys Choir, the 7th Grade Girls Choir, and the 8th Grade Mixed Choir
These choirs are open to any student who wishes to sing.
In addition to the three curricular choirs, there is an auditioned Chorale that rehearses outside of the school day, usually consisting of approximately 40 singers.
Peter Grau and Margaret Thompson conduct the ensembles at the Junior High and give voice lessons to all students. The accompanists at PVJHS is .
All PVJHS choirs perform four concerts each year; fall, winter and spring concerts that are all-choral at the junior high, and as part of the District Choral Festival at the high school during third quarter. Each year there are PVJHS students chosen to sing in the ICDA Opus Honor Choirs in the fall and the SEICDA Honor Choir in the spring.
The PVCSD Sixth Grade Chorus is open to any student who wishes to sing. Rehearsals are Monday and Wednesday mornings at the Junior High before the elementary school day begins.
Sixth Grade Choir members present three concerts each year. The December concert is with the Elementary Orchestras, and the District Choral Festival is at the High School in February, and the Spring Concert is combined with the Elementary Orchestras. The group will also sing on the Elementary Choir Tour each Spring. Sixth graders have been selected to sing at the ICDA Opus Honor Choirs each year.
Margaret Thompson directs the group.
