Now That I Can Read

I used to need somebody                                                  To sit and read to me.
I'd look at every page they read
And listen carefully.

But now that I am in first grade,
I'm filling up a shelf
With stories, poems, and other books
That I can read myself.

There are many areas of reading skills we focus on in first grade.  To share a few, we will spend time learning the 100 sight words for first grade, learning strategies to help us figure out unknown words (decoding strategies- see bookmark attached by downloading the file below), learning how to retell what we have read by using good sequencing (beginning, middle, and end) and learning to work with words by manipulating letters and sounds.
