Reading

This week, we will focus in on reading stories that encompass cause and effect situations.  Students will determine the cause of the situations, and determine how it impacted the story and relationships between the characters.

Common Core State Standard
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.3
Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1
Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

Science

This week, we will continue our Living Organisms Unit by focusing in on ECOLOGY (ecosystems).  Students will learn about various types of ecosystems, the characteristics that make up those ecosystems, how animals adapt to those ecosystems, and why certain animals cannot survive in specific environments.

Missouri Science Learning Standard
1Aa Identify the ways a specific organism may interact with other organisms or with the environment (pollination, shelter, seed dispersal, camouflage, migration, hibernation, defense mechanism).
1Ab Identify and describe how different environments (pond, forest, prairie) support the life of different types of plants and animals.

Math

This week, we will begin our Geometry Unit!  We will identify polygons by differentiating their attributes.  Then, we will focus in on quadrilaterals (square, rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid).

Common Core State Standard
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.G.A.1
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.

Spelling

This week, we will study a new spelling pattern.  The doubling consonant rule is one that is commonly forgotten.  Students will learn when to double the consonant in a word.

Common Core State Standard
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.2.F
Use spelling patterns and generalizations (e.g., word families, position-based spellings, syllable patterns, ending rules, meaningful word parts) in writing words.

Writing

This week, students will review and then continue strengthening their researching skills.
Common Core State Standard
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.2
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
