6th Grade Writing and English Curriculum


The large writing projects will be:

  1. First Quarter:  "Sandwich" Paragraph and Narrative Paper

  2. Second Quarter:  Research Paper

  3. Third Quarter:  Literary Analysis

  4. Fourth Quarter:  Folk Tale

***We will focus on writing a well written paragraph to essay questions throughout the year.***

Units in English:

  1. Nouns

  2. Verbs

  3. Common Mistakes in Writing

  4. Pronouns

  5. Adjectives/Adverbs

  6. Sentences

  7. Conjunctions, Interjections, Punctuation, and Capitalization

  8. Diagramming (done throughout the year)

Vocabulary Workshop Books:

Throughout the school year we will be using the “Vocabulary Workshop” books to help students achieve higher level reading proficiency.  The words are introduced with their meanings and there are a variety of activities for students to complete that help them apply and use these words in and out of the classroom.  Students will have a test over each unit.

*Gather and select topics and ideas for writing

*Organize, draft, revise and edit research papers, persuasive essays, and narrative stories

*Apply the uses of punctuation and grammar at a middle school level

*Usage of strong verbs, adjectives, and adverb

*Increase written and spoken vocabulary

Materials Needed

English textbook - covered

Vocabulary book

Folder & notebook

Writer’s notebook and binder

Writing Utensils - pencil, blue/black pen, red pen, highlighter, dry erase marker

Classroom Expectations

  1. Be kind.  Treat others the way you want to be treated.

  2. Be respectful.  Show respect for yourself and others at all times.  Actions that disrupt learning are not acceptable.

  3. Be prepared and on time.  Be in your seat with all your materials and ready to learn at the start of each class.

  4. Be productive.   Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

  5. Be humble.  You should be proud of your work and feel good about yourself, but please do not share your grades.  


Grades are broken down into four categories:

  1. Tests/Quizzes/Projects/Papers = %75  Tests, quizzes, and projects will be given throughout the year to assess overall comprehension of the material.

  2. Homework = 25%  Homework will be assigned on a regular basis.

Grading Scale

A+ = 100% C+ = 79-82%

A = 95-99% C = 75-78%

A- = 92-94% C- = 70-74%

B+ = 89-91% D+ = 68-69%

B = 86-88% D = 66-67%

B- = 83-85% D- = 65%

Homework Assignments

Your child will be bringing home assignments that will be graded either by them or myself.  Depending on the type of assignment, some assignments will have a percentage grade on them and others will have a 4(100), 3(92), 2(84), or 1(76).

Late Work Guide

Homework will be assigned on a regular basis.  You will receive full credit if the assignment is turned in on the the due date at the beginning of class.  If you do not have your assignment completed at this time, it will be marked late.  If the assignment is turned in within 24 hours of the original due date, the maximum credit received will be lowered by one letter grade.  After 48 hours after the original due date, the maximum credit received will be lowered by a second letter grade.  Assignments turned in after 72 hours, will receive no more than 50% credit.  

Tests and Quizzes

Tests and quizzes are announced ahead of time.  They will be posted on the middle school website and calendar.  To access the calendar you will need to go to the school website, click on students, and then click on ms calendar.
