6th Grade Literature Curriculum

Welcome to 6th grade literature.  I am looking forward to a wonderful year with you!  I hope this general information is helpful.  Remember this is a tentative outline for the year.


1st Quarter:  Rules by Cynthia Lloyd  

Textbook:  Short Fictional Stories

2nd Quarter:  Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (Speaker will come into the classroom to discuss the Holocaust)

Textbook:  Biographies and Autobiographies/Introduce Literature Circles

3rd Quarter:  Where the Red Fern Grow by Wilson Rawls

4th Quarter:  Battle of the Books

Textbook: Myths, Folk Tales, Fairy Tales, and Poetry

Essay Question:  During the school year students will practice writing a well written “sandwich” paragraph related to a story from that particular broadcast.

Book Club:  During 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarter, I offer book club.  This is not required but wonderful for those students that love to read.

Objectives for Literature

*Analyze text to identify character, plot, setting, conflict, and resolution

*Make predictions for a variety of stories based on inferences from the title, cover, and text

*Use strategies to read for information and enjoyment

*Organize and write essay answers

*Read a wide range of books, articles, and various texts(biographies, nonfiction, fantasy, historical fiction, etc.)

*Recognize that words may have different meanings and uses

*Increase written and spoken vocabulary

Literature textbook - covered

Folder & Notebook

Writing Utensils - blue/black pen, red pen, pencil, highlighter, dry erase marker
