Dear SMCS Parents,

As the St. Martha Athletic Director and 4th – 8th grade Physical Education/Health teacher, my job will be to provide each SMCS student with an opportunity to participate in activities that will foster physical skills, a sense of self worth and competence, a knowledge and understanding of the pleasures of sports, daily exercise, the principles of fair play, and Christian sportsmanship.  I believe that athletics builds self-confidence, resilience, self-control, and respect for others.

Physical Education provides learning experiences that contribute to the psychomotor, cognitive and affective development of each child.

Physical Education also gives students the knowledge and skills to make the most of their physical and mental abilities along with the building blocks necessary for good health. They will learn new skills and improve performance while gaining the self-discipline to take part in individual and group activities. Students acquire the knowledge needed to be physically fit and take part in a healthful physical activity on a regular basis.

Research has shown that school Physical Education classes can play an important role in encouraging young people to "get active" while adopting a habit of an active lifestyle. Childhood and adolescence may be pivotal times for preventing sedentary behavior in adulthood. I will strive to make every effort to require regular physical education in each grade and to promote physical activities that can be enjoyed throughout life. Physical education programs should help students develop a lifelong commitment to their own physical well being, health, and fitness.

I will be using the ELM Tree of Mastery from the Positive Coaching Alliance:

                                            E for Effort - L for Learning - M for Mistakes

How we respond to mistakes and the fear of them will be addressed over the course of the school year, as resiliency is a key to success in all athletes.

Your student will be successful if he/she:

    • routinely gives his/her best effort
    • has a "teachable spirit" and learns from everything that happens to him/her
    • doesn't let mistakes (or fear of mistakes) stop him/her

The 5th - 8th-grade students will also have a dedicated HEALTH class.  We have created a curriculum that goes beyond the basics of simple nutrition and exercise.  We begin the year focusing on striving towards reaching our full individual potential and believing in ourselves while following in Christ's footsteps. During the school year, we will move into the different specifics of learning about our body and the health benefits of taking care of it.  Please refer to the page devoted to the "Health Workshops by Grade Level".

Throughout the school year, we will concentrate on the ability to identify our problems and then solve them.  I truly have a passion for showing our youth the ups and downs of different life situations, some different perspectives and inspiring them to relax and "never say never" to new healthy experiences at such a young age.

My expectations are for each student to put forth their best effort in each class in a safe, responsible and respectful manner.  Having a positive attitude will help enable your student to receive the benefits of each days lesson.

The middle school students will be expected to come to class in their appropriate class attire.  They are required to wear the SMCS sanctioned PE uniform.  If you do not have a form, they are in the office or attached to this page on the bottom.  There will be a one week grace period at the beginning of the school year in order for the uniforms to come in and be distributed.  After all students have received their PE uniforms, each student will be held responsible for being prepared for class.  If the student is not prepared (dressed appropriately and on time) the student will not be allowed to participate in the daily activities, and will, therefore, receive an “O” for their daily participation grade.

I am looking forward to the opportunity that I have been given to work with your children as their Physical Education & Health teacher.

You may email me at any time, or call 281-358-5523 x 315

May God bless you and your family,

Mrs. Paula Snyder
