Brown Bear, Brown Bear!

posted Sep 11, 2017, 9:07 AM by Carol Dougherty

We had so much fun last week learning all about our five senses!  I think our sense of taste became the class favorite after our taste test :).  This week we will be working on the letter Bb, along with our theme, “Brown Bear.”  Our theme is centered around the story, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?”  By the end of the week the children are usually able to read the story all on their own.

This year we are very lucky to have a McAuley Little School teacher in our classroom.  Ms. Gina will be with us every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 - 10:00am.  She will plan a small lesson to do with the children every Wednesday!

Just a reminder that this Saturday is Hawktoberfest!  It is a great time for all!

Picture Day is next week on Tuesday, September 19th.  More information will be coming home this week, so make sure to take a look.  If your child does not attend school on Tuesdays, you can bring them up to school to get their picture taken.  There will be a retake day, but we do not find that out until after picture day.

Our Five Senses

posted Sep 1, 2017, 12:51 PM by Carol Dougherty

I hope everyone enjoyed their labor day weekend!  We are on to our second theme, “Our Five Senses.”  Each day we will learn about one or two of the senses and do a lot of fun activities with each sense.  We will also learn a song about our five senses.  This week we will have our first star helper, Emma!  The children are so excited and can’t wait for their turn.

Last week we finished up our first letter packet.   A note was attached that explained your child might not have finished the packet.  If your child is not here 5 days he/she may not have finished the entire packet.  It is not homework and does not need to be returned, but you are more than welcome to work on it at home.  As the weeks go by I will be adding cutting and gluing papers to our letter packet.

This week we will also start our journals.  From September to December the children will draw a picture to answer the question on each page.  Mrs. Shipman writes down their answer.  Starting in January, Mrs. Shipman writes their answer on a post it and they are encouraged to copy the answer themselves with a pencil in their journal.  The journals come home at the end of each month and are a great keepsake to look back throughout the year of your child’s progress.

**If you have not signed up on our class directory, please do so by Friday, Sept. 8th.  I will be printing off the directory over the weekend of the 9th and copying to send home.  Late entries will not be included.  Thank You!**

Meeting and Making New Friends ~ Week 2

posted Aug 27, 2017, 1:16 PM by Carol Dougherty

What a great first week we had!  I loved getting to know all of your children and I can tell it is going to be a great year!  Last week we started learning all of our routines in preschool and the children are catching on quickly.  Drop off in the morning went very smoothly on Friday and we were all smiles by the time the 8:00am bell rang :).  Thank you to everyone who signed up to help at the class parties, it is already full!  If you would still like to help at a party, please email me and I can let you know where we need help.

This week we are continuing on with our Meeting and Making New Friends theme.  During circle time we will talk about what makes a good friend, how we can be kind to everyone, and learn a new friend song too.  This week we will also start learning about the letter Mm.  That means we get to start our alphabet journal and our first letter packet.  All papers that we work on during the week will be sent home on Friday.  If your child does not attend school on Friday, they will receive their work on Monday.

On Wednesday, my monthly newsletter will be sent home along with other important papers for you to look through.  Our September author is Laura Numeroff.  If you have a book by our monthly author, your child is welcome to bring it to school and I will read it during circle time.  Please make sure your child's name is written inside.  Each month I will also be taking orders from scholastic.   A letter will go home explaining on how you can order books if you wish to.  I will not be sending home the flyer unless you request it.
*The brown envelope is also being sent home every Wednesday and contains important office information.  The envelopes go home to only the oldest child at the school.  Please sign and return the envelop the next day.

Here is a look at our week ahead...

Our sensory tub will be filled with marbles and tubes!  At the painting easel there will be red, blue, and yellow paint for the children to use.

Monday
This morning we will be working on our letter Mm packet, a "Who Am I?" class book, and make a mouse out of the letter M! To end our morning we will do some graphing with M & Ms!!
This afternoon we will start an all about me book.  Tomorrow afternoon we will complete them and share them with the class.

Tuesday
In the morning we will continue to work on our letter Mm packet, the "Who am I?" class book and finish up our mice.  In the afternoon we will finish up our "All About Me" book and share them with the class.  It is always fun to learn about everyone in the class.

Wednesday
Music Class ~ in the morning we go to music class with Mrs. Brodsky.  The children love going and Mrs. Brodsky does a wonderful job teaching the children new songs and dances.
When we return from music we will work in centers doing our letter M packet, painting with marshmallows, and start Religion chapter 1!  Each chapter comes with a story I read aloud to the class and then there is an activity inside for the children to complete.  On the back you will find a family extension part in case you would like to extend the lesson at home.
In the afternoon read the story, "Rainbow Fish" and discuss how our differences make us all unique gifts from God and how lucky we are to be ourselves and how important it is to share with our friends.  We will then complete a Rainbow fish activity and coloring sheet.

Thursday
Library Class with Mrs. Fike!  This is our second time going to library this year and we had a blast last week!
In the morning we will work on our letter Mm packets, and practice printing our names.  For our art project we will continue to paint with marshmallows.
In the afternoon I will introduce our September Author, Laura Numeroff.  Our first book that I will read to them is, "If You Give a Moose a Muffin."  When we are done reading the story we will make our own yummy muffins!  We will also complete a worksheet saying what we would give the moose.  This afternoon we will also make a monkey puppet.

Friday
September Class Tree Picture!  We will go outside to the courtyard to take a picture of our class tree.  I will make sure to post it, so check back at the end of the week.
P.E. Class with Mr. Kraft!  Please remember to send your child in gym shoes today.
In my classroom we refer to Friday as FUN FRIDAY!  We get to do freeze dance during circle time and play fun games during centers.  Today in the morning we will finish up our letter Mm packets and marshmallow painting.  We will play the game ZINGO! too!
In the afternoon we will continue with fun Friday by playing freeze dance again and make a mess with printing practice in shaving cream!  We are sure to have a lot of fun!

Just a reminder that Monday we have no school.  Have a great long weekend!
