First Grade News
By Christina Lopez
First grade has been very busy working hard this school year! I have seen so much growth this second trimester. One area were there has been a tremendous amount of improvement is in math. We are currently learning about measurement and time. Students are enjoying the different hands-on math activities we are doing in class, like measuring different items around the classroom with nonstandard measuring tools, such as paper clips and foam squares.
Another area were I have seen an enormous amount of growth is in writing. We are using the Lucy Calkin’s writing curriculum in our classroom as well as working with writing expert Anne Diskin. Anne has come to observe writing lessons as well as work with the children on their writing. We are in the narrative story unit and students have already written many short narrative stories. They love creating new stories and sharing them with their classmates. All of the students have been working hard both at home and at school in math, reading, and writing. I am very proud of my students! Keep up the good work first grade!
In Religion, students are learning about the season of Lent and what it means to be a follower of Jesus. During this season of Lent we have been focusing on almsgiving, fasting, and prayer and what each of them mean. We also discussed each liturgical season of the church calendar. We have been connecting the experiences we have in first grade to the teachings of Jesus and what we can do to help us become better followers of Jesus. Our school counselor, Ms. Katey, has been coming in to do “Mindfulness” with us. Each week are learning a new mindful skill as well as practicing our breathing. This practice is helping us be more mindful and intentional during prayer this season of Lent.
Technology has also been helping us in first grade. All first graders get to use their iPads for reading centers and math centers. The students are able to listen to stories, build words, take comprehension quizzes, and study sight words on many different applications. Raz-Kids and Smarty Ants are two key applications the students are using during reading centers. Dreambox is the key application for math. All three of these applications can be accessed at home. Please have your child spend time (preferably a minimum of 20 minutes) each week on this applications at home.
It is hard to believe the end of the school year is just around the corner. We have about 45 days left together in first grade. Please talk to your child’s teacher if you are interested in your child attending summer school. I’m very proud of the amount of growth I have seen so far this year. This is a wonderful group of students who truly work hard at school and at home. They are all very eager to grow and learn. Looking forward to a fun and successful third trimester filled with a tremendous amount of growth!
