St. Joachim School Family Calendar

St. Joachim School

From The Principal's Desk...

Dear SJS Families,

Just 8 school days left for our 8th graders, the graduating class of 2017! The class had their end of the year retreat at the Lafayette Retreat Center, a facility owned and operated by the Diocese of Oakland. At the retreat they reflected on their time here at St. Joachim and on their faith, family and friends. It was an awesome experience and I feel fortunate to have spent a few hours with them last Thursday. Now on to graduation festivities next week! Graduation is Saturday, June 3rd at 1pm in the church. All are invited!

Please be sure to read this week's Teacher's Corner (below) from our 8th grade teacher and Associate Principal, Dana Bayer. In it you will find incredible news about 3 of our 8th grade students, Kirk Kinzler, Vanessa Alvarez and Gail Monica...all recipients of prestigious scholarships form Moreau Catholic High School! A huge congrats to them all! Way to go!

The end of the school year for the rest of us (only 12 days left) is very close. It is amazing how fast the year goes by. There is a great deal left to do, however, not the least is to say goodbye to the class of 2017. The Farewell Assembly is on Thursday, June 1st . We begin at approximately 10:30am. We will gather as this SJS community for the last time as each class says farewell to our graduates. If you have not experienced a Farewell Assembly please feel free to join us!

The last week of school is brief, as the final day of school is Wednesday, June 7th. On that day we will have our Rite of Passage. A tradition that began about 10 years ago, we gather together to “move forward” together. We honor and celebrate the year, always with an eye to the next year. Growth and progress for every student is our goal and we work hard every day to demonstrate it! Come and experience the Rite of Passage on Wednesday, June 7th at 9:30am sharp!

Have a great week!

Eighth Grade News
By Dana Bayer

With just 13 more school days left, the 2016-17 school year is quickly coming to a close. Today the 8th graders went on their final elementary school field trip on AMTRAK to Sacramento where they visited the Railroad Museum, Old Town and the State Capitol. It is a fun way to celebrate the end of the school year and to see the state government in action after studying about the US government for the past trimester.

This Thursday and Friday 8th graders will go on an overnight retreat at the Lafayette Retreat Center to celebrate “The Journey” over that past 9 years of elementary school. They will spend some time reflecting on the past, discussing the future and strengthening the relationships that they have formed over their years at St. Joachim. We know we have achieved our goal of building community when students describe their relationship with each other as brothers and sisters and their class as a family. This is the case with the Class of 2017 and we look forward to celebrating these next few weeks with them.

We are very proud to announce that this year’s class possibly has earned the most high school scholarships from Moreau Catholic in recent memory. The students do not apply but rather the Scholarship Committee selects recipients based on their admissions application essays, HSPT scores, and GPA. Kirk Kinzler was awarded the President’s Scholarship and the Bernie Puccini Scholarship, Vanessa Alvarez was awarded the Brother Gary Stone Scholarship and the Blessed Basil Moreau scholarship and Gail Mojica was awarded the Mariner Leadership Scholarship based on her academic performance and her leadership and service activities. These scholarships are renewable for all four years of high school and together total over $50,000. Congratulations to the recipients and their families!

In addition to Moreau Catholic, our students will be attending many local high schools in the fall including Bishop O’Dowd, Impact, Leadership, Crosspoint Academy, East Bay Arts and many of our local public schools. It is our hope that their education at St. Joachim has prepared them well for the rigors and the challenges of high school and more importantly to be good people of faith and integrity.

Please join us to celebrate the Class of 2017 at the Graduation Mass at 1:30 on Tuesday, May 30, The farewell assembly at 10:45 in the gym on June 1 or the Graduation Ceremony on June 3 at 2:00 PM in the church.
