Course Description:

This course provides an introduction to the cosmos, including theories about its beginning and our place within it.  Basic physics will be used to explain the formation of stars and planets, orbits, and how we know the distances between celestial bodies.  Readings, videos, and, where possible, telescope work will all be used to inform these topics.

Course Topics:
  • Our Solar System
  • Our Galaxy: The Milky Way
  • The Local Group and the Local Supercluster
  • The Superclusters and the Observable Universe
  • Cosmology and the Grand Design
