"Computational Social Science meets Grounded Theory Method"
Nicholas Garcia and Natalia Levina
Abstract: Researchers who do computational social science and design science have developed processes for how they approach a research problem, gather and analyze data, come to their conclusions, and write-up their findings. In this talk, we will introduce ideas from qualitative social science especially those using Grounded Theory Method (GTM) to discuss how it can inform research process of a computational social scientist. While we recognize that some computational social scientists already use approaches we plan to discuss, it may be useful to brainstorm further how to integrate these two research processes. In particular, integrating qualitative approaches into a computational social scientist’s research process can lead to different research questions being asked, alternative sources of data being sought, and greater care being taken in reporting research findings.
