“How Unifying Themes Emerge in Groups of Independent Researchers: A Discussion”
Led by: Natalia Levina, Foster Provost, and Arun Sundararajan
We will seed a discussion about how 'big ideas' and shared research themes emerge in environments (like ours) that comprise independent researchers each pursuing their own program of research. This is a pre-cursor to a more focused discussion on one (or more) topics that some of us feel might be, beyond data science and analytics, unifying themes in IOMS, and what resources a department might provide to facilitate this emergence. We will provide a framework for discussion and some recent examples we are close to (like our own WIN). Please come prepared to discuss any examples of such emergence from groups like ours in IS and IOMS you are aware of, as well as of other historical examples (the Cowles Commission, the Manhattan Project) you may be familiar with that could be instructive.
