"Why Do High-Tech Firms Offer Perks at Work"
Xuan Ye
This study explores why providing on-the-job benefits has become increasingly prevalent in high-tech firms, using a novel dataset collected from a leading online labor market intermediary–Glassdoor.com. We present a model that incorporates on-going human capital investment as a prominent feature of IT work to analyze the relationship between employer-provided workplace perks and IT human capital accumulation. Then, by analyzing workers' reviews about the firm, we find that IT workers have a 20% higher likelihood of reporting that they derive value from workplace benefits; IT workers with longer working hours and who reference on-the-job learning are most likely to value these benefits. Our results underscore the importance of workplace benefits for encouraging IT human capital accumulation (Results are preliminary).
