"Leveraging Customer Reviews for Recommendation Purposes"
Konstantin Bauman and Alex Tuzhilin
There has been much work on leveraging customer reviews for providing personalized recommendations based on these reviews, most of it focusing on predicting and explaining ratings in terms of the customer and product characteristics. This talk will present a novel approach of enhancing functionality of recommender systems based on customer reviews by recommending not only products of interest to the customer but also specific aspects of consumption of the products to further enhance customer experience with those products. For example, a customer may receive a recommendation not just to go to a restaurant but also to try seafood there. The proposed method is based on the sentiment analysis of customer reviews, predicts sentiments that the customer might express about various aspects of the review identified in an application, and determines the most valuable aspects of customer’s potential experience with the product. In addition, a new method of discovering relevant contextual information from customer reviews will be presented in this talk. The proposed methods were empirically tested on the Yelp review data and the results of this study will be discussed in the presentation.
