Laptop Requirement

Laptop Computer Requirement and Recommendations for 2017-2018

All full and part-time MBA students and incoming undergraduate students are required to have a laptop computer.  The laptop requirement ensures that you will have access to the resources needed to successfully complete NYU Stern's program of study. 

If you will be purchasing a laptop for your time at NYU Stern, we offer a NYU Stern laptop in partnership with Dell.  If you already own a laptop computer, or choose to select another model, please be sure that it meets our Recommended Configuration.

The type of laptop you choose will determine the level of support you receive from Stern IT. 
  • NYU Stern Dell Latitude E7480 will receive Advanced Support.
  • Computers meeting the Recommended Configuration will receive Basic Support.
  • Apple computers will receive Basic support.

Dell Latitude will be available at NYU Computer Store.

The following laptop models will be available at the NYU Computer Store 726 Broadway.  Prices are subject to change. Listed models are compatible with the NYU wireless network.

Recommended Configuration (Basic Support)

Hardware Requirements

  • Dual Core Processor

  • 256 GB or more hard drive
  • 12” or larger monitor
  • 6 hour battery life (recommended)
  • 2 or more USB ports (recommended)
  • 802.11b/g/n Wireless Adapter
  • VGA Display adapter for Macs (undergraduate students only)

Software Requirements

  • English-language OS
  • Windows 7/8/10 Professional Edition or Mac OS 10.x 
  • Anti-Virus Software required – Stern provides free Symantec license
  • Microsoft Office Home and Student - Word, Excel and Powerpoint (recommended)

Support

Support for the wireless network and laptop computing is provided by our HelpDesk located in Tisch L100. 

The level of support you receive from Stern IT will depend on the laptop model you purchase. Two support options are available - Basic and Advanced. You can find more details about these support levels below.
  • NYU Stern Dell Latitude E7480 will receive Advanced Support.
  • Apple 2.3GHz Macbook Pro 13" will receive Basic Support.
  • All other laptops/computers that meet the Recommended Configuration will receive Basic Support.

Basic Support

Laptops meeting the Minimum Configuration will receive Basic Support.  Basic Support provides "best-effort" assistance to access basic Stern resources including Gmail, web applications and printing.  Access to Stern services are not guaranteed and may depend on the condition of the computer and its components.   NYU Stern does not provide hardware assistance, including assistance to repair broken, disabled or faulty computers or computer components.

Advanced Support

Students who purchase a NYU Stern Recommended Dell listed above will receive Advanced Support. Advanced Support provides assistance to access all NYU Stern resources including: Gmail, printing, and web applications.   Troubleshooting of NYU Stern-supported software will be provided.  NYU Stern IT will provide troubleshooting assistance and coordinate with Dell to provide hardware support should a hardware component in the laptop fail.  In the event that the laptop experiences critical software failures, NYU Stern IT will assist in restoring the laptop to the original factory software installation.

What level of support will your vendor provide?

Hardware components sometimes fail.  If you have a NYU Stern Recommended Dell laptop, we will be able to help you get the problem solved.  If you are planning to purchase a different laptop, be sure to ask about their service and support warranty.  Some vendors provide on-site, next business day support while others provide mail-in support that may result in a three-week, or longer, turnaround period.  You may have the option to purchase premium level support, which is recommended, as you will be relying heavily on your laptop to complete your coursework and assignments.
