I am interested in the challenges and mechanisms of organization learning as well as the causal attributions of business performance. First, I have been intrigued by the so-called ‘credit assignment problem' - how do people and firms learn when there is no immediate outcome feedback? Building on ideas of learning from a variety of disciplines such as machine learning, behavioral decision making as well as cognitive psychology, I develop theoretical models of organizational learning to examine the possibilities and consequences of learning.
My second area of interest is the fundamental implications for strategy. I ask: How would the credit assignment challenge impact 1) when and where could firms discover strategic opportunities where resources are potentially mis-valued? 2) the appropriate role of luck in performance evaluation, inference and learning.
