Read and Write for Google Docs - Chrome Extension

Google has a new extension that can be added through your Google Chrome browser that allows for Google Documents to be read to the students.  You can go to the Google Chrome store and add this extension for yourself by going to: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readwrite-for-google-docs/inoeonmfapjbbkmdafoankkfajkcphgd?hl=en-US. The extension only works on Google Documents (not presentations, spreadsheets, forms, etc.), but the possibilities for using it with Google Documents is amazing.  You can copy and paste information from other resources into a document, and then have it read aloud to the students.  You can highlight a word in the text and either do a Google Search for it on the web, or click on the picture dictionary icon for a quick picture of the word.  It also has a regular dictionary included that can be used to find the definition of a word in the text.  It will also translate individual words into Spanish (translation for the whole document can be done by clicking on "Tools" and then clicking on translate document).  Once the box pops up with the Spanish words, you can double click the words to have them read aloud.

There are several voices to choose from, as well -- Samantha (American Female Voice), Karen (Australian female voice), Paulina (American/Spanish female voice), and several more.  You can set the speed of the voice too from very slow to fast.

To get started, just click on the link listed above in this post.  Then, add the extension.  After that, you will need to open up a Google Document from your Google Drive using the Google Chrome browser (the extension only works when you are using Chrome, not Internet Explorer or any other browser).  You will get a pop-up box the first time you open a document after you have added this extension (it will only come up once).  You need to accept the extension.  Then, you will see a tab appear at the top of the document screen that says: "Read and Write".  Just click on the tab and it will drop down icons to use.

Here's a video to see all of the functions that the extension can do for you.  If you are using the Google Chrome browser, the videos don't always show up, so please click on the following link to access the video.
