During the two week 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships (AWSC) event, over 220,000 athletes, coaches, staff, media and spectators came together in Eagle County to watch world class skiing. There were 1,100 local first responders and volunteers tasked with keeping the communities safe and the event enjoyable for everyone. Built on a existing public/private partnership, stakeholders worked together to deploy a Public Safety LTE Demonstration Network: a deployable Cell on Wheels (COW), providing coverage at the remote Beaver Creek race site, was networked to 4 sites on a commercially owned Distributed Antenna System (DAS) in the town of Vail. First responders used ruggedized smart phones, high definition fixed cameras and Wi-Fi hot spots on Band Class 14 spectrum to support non-mission critical activities. The demonstration was a tremendous success and provided a solid proving ground to showcase the benefits of a Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network.
