DIRECTORS COMMITTEE PROCEDURES 

 1.    Director -  To be a Director for Stage Crafters you must meet one of the two following requirements:

Current member of Stage Crafters to submit, Direct, or co-Direct a major Stage Crafters production

- and -
Satisfied the criteria for either 4 or 5 below -or- previously directed a major Stage Crafters production

- or - 

 Qualify as a Guest Director

2.    Voting Membership -  Voting members of the Stage Crafters Directors Committee must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Current member of Stage Crafters.
  2. Satisfied the criteria for either 4 or 5 below -or- previously directed a major Stage Crafters production
  3. Directed, or submitted to direct, a major Stage Crafters production or a one-act play for public presentation within 3 years of the current calendar year. (i.e.  If the current year is 1999, then you must have directed or submitted to direct for the seasons 1998, 1997, or 1996)

3.    Guest Directors -  A guest Director is someone who qualifies under the following criteria:

  1. Someone who has never directed a major Stage Crafters production or one-act play in the past.
  2. A professional authority invited by the Director's Committee, with the approval of the Executive Board, to direct a major Stage Crafters production or one-act play.

4.    New Directors with directing experience outside of Stage Crafters -  Individuals with directing experience outside of Stage Crafters will be asked to fulfill the following requirements before being eligible to submit to direct:

  1. Member of Stage Crafters for one year prior to submitting.
  2. Submit a theatrical resume with references prior to submitting.
  3. Direct a one-act play for public presentation.
  4. Assist any major production in one of the following areas (to include working the show): props chair, set design and/or construction chair, costume chair, lighting chair (including installation), stage manager, Producer, or assistant-Director.                      

5.    New Directors without previous directing experience - Individuals without previous directing experience will be asked to fulfill the following requirements before being eligible to submit to direct:

  1. Member of Stage Crafters for one year prior to submitting
  2. Appear on stage in an acting role (either major production or one-act).
  3. Chair a technical committee for a major stage Crafters production.
  4. Work as stage manager on a major Stage Crafters production.
  5. Work as assistant-Director on a major Stage Crafters production.
  6. Work as Producer on a major Stage Crafters production (non-waiverable requirement)
  7. Direct a one-act play for public presentation

6.    Musical Director - An individual without previous experience directing a musical production must either assistant direct or co-Direct a Stage Crafters musical production with a n experienced Stage Crafters musical production director before being eligible to direct a musical.

7.    Silent Partner - All first-time directors of a major Stage Crafters production must have a silent partner.  First-time directors are responsible to solicit/obtain a silent partner for their production prior to submitting to direct.  Silent partners must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Be a voting member of the Directors Committee.
  2. A silent partner for a musical must have directed a major Stage Crafters musical production(s).
  3. Help and advise their new Director/partner when necessary.
  4. Silent partner will assist the Director to fill any vacancies for chair positions required for the production (i.e. producer, stage manager, etc…)
  5. Keep the Directors Committee informed of the progress of the play.
  6. Assume directorship of the production should a new Director withdraw from the production in progress.
  7. The Directors Committee, as necessary, will assist silent partners.

8.    General Director Procedures

  1. All directors are encouraged to employ an assistant-Director for their productions (and are encouraged to use those Stage Crafters members who are trying to fulfill requirements to submit to direct.).
  2. All Directors of major Stage Crafters productions will employ a Producer.  If a Director is unable to solicit/obtain a Producer, the Executive Board will appoint one.
  3. All Directors and aspiring Directors are encouraged to conduct/participate in theatre workshops/seminars.
  1. Should a Director withdraw from a published season, the Directors Committee will attempt to obtain, and recommend to the Executive Board for approval, a replacement Director for the scheduled production.  If this is not possible, the Directors Committee will determine and recommend an alternate play and Director to the Executive Board.

9.    General Directors Committee Procedures

  1. Submit a recommended schedule for the next season to the Executive Board annually, not later than 30 June.
  2. Provide the Executive Board with the list of all plays/directors submitted to the Directors Committee for consideration for the next season, to include recommendations for "Adult Themes & Language" disclaimers.
  3. Ensure quality theatrical presentations and productions for Stage Crafters.
  4. Encourage and train new directors.
  5. Read and review plays for potential future use by Stage Crafters.
  6. Establish and conduct workshops to encourage and train members in all aspects of theatre.

10. Special Voting Memberships - A musical and/or technical advisor may be appointed by the Directors Committee, with the approval of the Executive Board, to serve as a voting member of the Director's Committee.

11. Waivers - Waivers of any of the "director eligibility" requirements (with the exception of the non-waiverable producer requirement for new directors without previous directing experience) can be accomplished only by a two-thirds majority vote of the Directors Committee voting membership.  Directing requirements will be waived only when qualified directors with Stage Crafters experience are not available.  When requirements are waived for an individual, an explanation will be forwarded to the Executive Board.

12.  This version of the Directors Committee Procedures supersedes all previous Directors Committee Procedures, Guidelines, or amendments.
