This new online learning tool will be available to all staff and students from the start of the new academic year (2011/12). Blackboard Collaborate is a virtual classroom environment that allows academic staff to deliver 'live events' through a simple web interface that than can be viewed by individuals or groups via an internet connection at multiple physical locations. The events can be recorded and archived.
Blackboard Collaborate should be available to staff from around the 1st August on the new Blackboard 9.1 installation at http://learning.westminster.ac.uk
However, if you can't wait, you can sign up for a 30 day trial of the Blackboard Collaborate system via this link: http://www.elluminate.com/trial/register.go?

It is now possible for you to try out Blackboard Mobile Learn if you wish to. This application will allow staff and students to access and use Blackboard on a range of mobile devices. To try out Blackboard Mobile Learn on a compatible device (see below) this is what you need to do:
1. Download the “Blackboard Mobile Learn” app from the store for your mobile device at no cost. You can download an app for iphone, ipad, Blackberry. Android phone and Palm OS devices.
2. Once you have the Blackboard app installed on your mobile device search for the University with the search term 4n7tvu (see note below in relation to this code)
3. That should find the University of Westminster account and you will be able to login using your University computing account
Do please give it a try if you wish. If you have any trouble
using Blackboard Mobile or have any comments about the application please
follow the hyperlink 'Blackboard Mobile Learn' (to the right under Navigation) and use the 'Comments' option on that page.
*Why use ‘4N7TVU’ in the search box? This value is used by the app to find our institution and test the application whilst the building block is set to Development/Testing/Staging. If we set the building block to ‘Production’ all students could find and start using it. Once the building block is in production users will be able to search using the term ‘University of Westminster’.
A number of staff at recent workshops have asked for clarification on dates when the new Blackboard system will replace the current one and how long the then ‘old’ Blackboard system will be available.
- The new Blackboard 9.1 system is now available to staff (but not to students) at http://learning.westminster.ac.uk
- Students will be able to access the new Blackboard system from the 5th September 2011
- The current Blackboard system will remain accessible to staff and current students (at the URL http://learning.wmin.ac.uk) until end of December 2011 and then for staff only until December 2012
- Blackboard archive (the Blackboard installation from academic year 2009/10 located at http://bb-archive.wmin.ac.uk) will remain accessible to staff until December 2011
All staff should now be able to sign in to the Blackboard 9.1 system which will be used for academic year 11/12.
The system is located at http://learning.westminster.ac.uk and you can sign in with your usual university username and password.
Please do take a look as soon as you can to check a) that the Blackboard sites you would expect to see are on the new system and b) any content you had on the old system has been migrated to the new system.
Blackboard 9.1 is quite different to the current Blackboard system and you may wish to take a look at this video to get a quick overview of the Blackboard 9.1 interface.
After you have had a good look at the new system, if you have any concerns/problems/questions I would ask please if in the first instance you could record a FIXIT call online via the FIXIT Centre Link on the signed in intranet homepage. PLEASE when you complete the online FIXIT form enter ‘Blackboard 9’ in the subject box.
