Welcome to Griffin Middle School AVID

Welcome to all things AVID at Griffin Middle School! AVID stand for "Advancement Via Individual Determination" and is a nationwide program geared towards getting our students in competition for enrollment spots at colleges and universities across the world. This program provides support for students, who without this class, may not have thought about going to college or would not have known what steps to take to achieve that dream.

What is AVID at the middle school level?

In the AVID elective at the middle school level, we focus on teaching our students the following skills:

  • Organization
  • Time Management
  • Critical Thinking
  • Great Study Habits
  • Leadership
  • Character Building
  • Responsibility
  • Accountability
  • Independence

A typical week in the AVID elective class includes two days of tutoring with college-aged students, one day of AVID curriculum fostering critical thinking skills, and a "Fun Day Friday" focusing on team and character building activities.

During our tutoring days, students split into small groups based on the content of their problem they feel they need help on. Our AVID tutors and the students in groups use higher level inquiry questioning to help the presenting student solve his or her problem. This critical thinking process will help students problem solve with content in higher level classes throughout the rest of their educational career.

For questions about this elective class, or how to get your student involved next year, please email our AVID Coordinator or one of the AVID Elective Teachers.
