Our focus this week is data analysis. Students will read and interpret frequency tables, bar graphs, dot plots, and stem-and-leaf plots. We will also be introducing scatter plots which are new to 5th grade! Students are expected to solve one & two step problems involving data. We will send home a review on Thursday! Our test will be on Friday!

We have a busy week ahead in math! We will continue finding the volume of rectangular prisms and cubes on Monday and Tuesday! Due to student need, Mrs. Davis will give the test on Wednesday. However, students in Ms. Uberta's class will take the test on Thursday! Students will receive a review sheet on Tuesday.
On Thursday and Friday, students will solve problems by calculating conversions within the customary system. We use the following strategy to teach customary conversions. Students will also use the STAAR Reference Materials!
Example: 3 ft = _________ in 1 ft = 12 in H -----------------F (multiply)
3 x 12 = 36
3 ft = 36 in |

Our focus this week will be classifying 2-D figures. Specifically, students will classify triangles and quadrilaterals according to angles and sides. Our test will be on Tuesday, February 18. Students can use NKO flashcards to study geometry vocabulary!
On Tuesday, students will take the STAAR Math Benchmark. We will use the results from the benchmark to make instructional decisions such as reorganizing tutoring groups and topics to review!

At the beginning of the week, we will continue to focus on using algebraic expressions to create tables and graphs. Students will create tables for a given rule. We will also sort numerical patterns from table into additive or multiplicative! Our test on algebraic expressions and order of operations will be on Wednesday. Students will receive a review on Tuesday.
Our focus for the rest of the week will be geometry. We will classify triangles according to angles and sides.

Our focus this week is on using algebraic expressions to create tables and graphs. Students will create tables for a given rule. We will also sort numerical patterns from table into additive or multiplicative! At the end of the week, students will use use coordinate grids to plot data from tables. Coordinates are written as a pair of numbers or ordered pairs that appear in the same order every time. We write the coordinates to a point as (left-right coordinate, up-down coordinate).

We are proud of the 5th graders hard work on the 2nd Nine Weeks CBA!
This week we will begin Order of Operations using the acronym PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction). In 5th grade, students do not solve numeric expressions with exponents. Students will have a daily grade on Friday!
3 + (7 x 6) - 4 (Parentheses) 3 + 42 -4 (Addition/Subtraction------Left to Right) 45 -4 41

Students will continue to use the standard algorithm and pictorial models to solve problems. We will have a test on dividing decimals on Tuesday. A review sheet will be sent home on Monday!
With the end of the 2nd Nine Weeks, students will take the Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA) on Thursday, January 16 and Friday, January 17. It will include the TEKS covered in the 2nd Nine weeks and previously taught material. A review sheet will be sent home on Tuesday for homework! We will also review in class!

Our focus this week will be dividing decimals. Students will use the standard algorithm and pictorial models to solve problems. An example of the pictorial model is below. We are tentatively planning to have a dividing decimals test on Tuesday, January 14. A review will be sent home.
The model shows 6 groups of 0.3. As a result, the answer is 0.3. With the end of the 2nd Nine Weeks, students will take the Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA) on Thursday, January 16. It will include the TEKS covered in the 2nd Nine weeks and previously taught material. A review sheet will be sent home on Tuesday for homework! We will also review in class! |
