Tech-Girls Club

posted Nov 30, 2015, 9:40 AM by Kim Wilkens   [ updated Nov 30, 2015, 11:55 AM ]

The MissBits just wrapped up a very fun robotics season by competing in their first FLL Regional Tournament in Lynchburg. Though teams in FLL competitions are often co-ed, Ms. Wilkens was excited to lead an all-girls team.

"Research shows that middle school girls often self-select out of these type of extra curricular experiences and we've even seen that happen at the School with tech-related clubs and electives," she said. "It's important to give girls a space to build confidence with tech and determine their own tech identity without the impact of negative stereotypes."

Now it's time for a new challenge! Girls in fifth through eighth grade are invited to join us on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. in the CS Lab where we'll learn about making apps in order to join the ProjectCSGirls or Technovation Challenge!

Also, Learning Village Grades 5 - 8 students are always welcome in the CS Lab on Tuesday mornings for CS Club.

First Lego League Teams @ STAB

posted Aug 19, 2015, 8:48 AM by Kim Wilkens   [ updated Aug 25, 2015, 10:53 AM ]

First Lego League (FLL) is a team-based competition for middle school students. FLL combines getting hands-on with robotics and programming with a team focus on solving a real world problem. This year’s challenge theme is Trash to Treasure.

For the 2015 season, STAB will have an all-girls and and an all-boys FLL Robotics Teams. The season runs from September to early November. We’ll get the meetings going as soon as we figure out everyone’s availability. The FLL Robotics Teams are open to students in 5th thru 8th grade (you must be between the ages of 9 and 14). Team membership is limited, apply now!
