After a period of settling in and exploring our environment your child will recieve a special sound box to borrow for the year. As we learn new sounds, these will appear in their boxes to practice and engage with at home. As more letters appear words can be made too! Alongside the sound boxes will be sheet of game ideas to use with them. The sound boxes benefit each reception class, please remember these are to borrow and are to be returned at the end of the year, thank you.

This is the order in which we learn and practice new graphemes:

Phase 1
Phase 1  concentrates on developing children's speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Phase 2. The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills.

Phase 2
Set 1: s, a, t, p
Set 2: i, n, m, d
Set 3: g, o, c, k
Set 4: ck, e, u, r
Set 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss

Tricky Words: I, go, to,no, the, into

Phase 3

Set 6: j, v, w, x

Set 7: y, z, zz, qu

Consonant digraphs: ch, sh, th, ng

Vowel digraphs: ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er

Tricky Words: he, she,we,me,be,was,you,they,all,are,my,her

Please note: Phonics supports children learning sounds at their own pace, and children will be supported according to their individual journey through activities provided during and after our phonics sessions. It is also worth noting that in phonics, securing blending of words eg. sh-e-ll is shell  and correct pronunciation of sounds eg. 'mmm' as opposed to saying 'mer' or 'em' is key, alongside learning how to read and write the phonemes above
