Kaler State of the School

July 11, 2014

Greetings Kaler School families,

What a fabulous first few weeks as Kaler principal. The school is teaming with students taking advantage of an extended school year. I am pleased to be able to meet so many kids before the start of school.

After having met several of you at the informational meeting last spring and reading the on-line survey results, I am pleased to share some of the nuts and bolts of the School Improvement Grant that will be of specific interest to you and your family this year.  Parents at the information night were very excited about the additional support for teachers and students! I’d love to know what YOU think about the added supports.

  • Extended School Day (8:30 am – 3:30 pm)

+    This means more time for direct instruction with the classroom teacher

  • Direct instruction after school (3 days a week, 3:30 – 4:30) with math and literacy specialist

+    This means that students can receive one-on-one and small group support on individualized learning goals for as short or as long as it takes to “catch up.” Transportation will be provided.

  • Additional classroom support through a Math Coach and Literacy Coach

This means that teachers will be coached on how to best meet your child’s needs based on test results and proven teaching techniques.

These experts will not only model and support teachers, but that they will also help develop individual, classroom, and school goals in literacy and math.

These experts will be the teachers for the students able to access extra support from 3:30pm – 4:30pm, 3 days weekly.

  • Teacher Professional Development 90 minutes weekly during the school day.

+    This means teachers will be reviewing and collaborating on student data and best teaching practices to ensure students are moving along on their learning paths.

  • Additional classroom support through 4 more educational technicians

This means that classrooms will be better supported to individualize student learning as well as to cover classroom while teachers are meeting.

  • New Progress Reporting System (by year’s end)

+    This means that the new computer program Jump Rope (already used at the middle school level) will provide detailed information to follow your child’s journey toward success in meeting all of the grade level learning targets.  Parents can monitor progress as often as daily, if they wish.

Other changes not part of the grant, but made possible due to class size increase, separate federal funding, and scheduling changes include:

  • A few more minutes for lunch / recess.
  • Two classes of every grades K-5. (No more 3 / 4). I will introduce some pretty fantastic NEW hires next month!
  • No class will have more than one special per day.
  • Learning Works – is an after school learning opportunities for students whose parents desire an academic “boost” for their child.  The curriculum is designed around Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.  Over the past five years 90% of the students who participate advance at least one grade level and 50% of them advance even more.

I will continue to share with you the exciting changes as the school year begins and schedules are solidified. Staff has already let me know that the Kaler parents are full of energy and wonderful supporters of education. Please feel free to contact me via phone (799 – 3214) or email with your ideas, concerns, or even an introduction throughout the summer.

This is also a shout out hoping to get another parent volunteer for the BLT (Building Leadership Team). This group of highly invested and bright educators is charged with developing/implementing the School Improvement Plan as well as the SIG grant. (No small task!) We meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 3:15 – 5:15 pm.  If you are interested and available, please let me know ASAP. FYI: I am planning on vacationing July 29 – August 8.

Enjoy the fabulous weather and time with your children. Know that we (staff, students, parents, and district) are underway in this exciting transformation to move Kaler from good to GREAT!
