My name is Diane Lang and I am the Proud Principal of Kaler
Elementary School. I am in my 7th year at Kaler and each year has been
better than the prior year. The best part of my day is when I am able to
join classrooms and talk to students about their learning.
We are in the third year of our Renewal Plan. Our teachers use the
Project Based Learning (PBL) methodology. We begin each day with
Mentoring Breakfast where students and staff have time to connect each
morning. Student voice and leadership are being fostered through our
Kaler Kids Leadership Team.
We have openings at our school for students from other South
Portland Elementary Schools to join us. If you want to learn more about
being a member of our school please call me at 799-3214 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Please explore this website further to learn more about our wonderful learning community.

Email: LangDi @spsd.orgJanuary 17, 2012 Dear Parents and Guardians, Winter
feels like it has finally arrived. I hope all are able to stay warm
during these cold nights and days. Although winter is an easy time to go
into hibernation mode, the Kaler community has lots of activities going
on in the next few weeks. I hope you join us for them all. Student/Parent/Teacher conferences begin January 23. We had 95% turnout for the fall conferences. Our goal is to have 100% participation for the winter conferences.
Please make sure you sign up for a time with your child’s teacher.
These are important nights to review the goals set in October,
review/analyze student portfolios and day-to-day work, and establish new
goals if necessary. These conferences are one way to build and maintain
home school relationships and communication. Please join us. Thursday, January 26 we are having our second Open Library Night. See the flyer attached to this email. James
Otis Kaler School of Inquiry and Exploration has a vision of shared
leadership. One of our goals is to develop leadership in all of our
students. One step in that process is the development of the Kaler Kids
Leadership Team. The purpose of the team is to have students take a
leadership role in effecting change at Kaler School. Students lead
students with the goal of academic and behavioral improvement. We view
the Core Values as the springboard for focus of this work. Teachers
have nominated one student from each class to be on this team. Those
students and families have been contacted. The Kaler Kids Leadership
Team has its first meeting on Wednesday, January 18. I will keep you
posted on the work they do at our school. We are very excited about this
new initiative at Kaler. I
am please to share with you that on Monday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m. at
City Council Chambers, the Kaler Renewal Team will be presenting to the
South Portland School Board. We will be highlighting our mentoring
breakfast and work on Project Based Learning. I hope some of you will be
able to join us in City Chambers or at least watch us on cable. Please
update your child’s contact information, particularly home, cell, and
emergency numbers. I cannot stress enough how important this information
is to a school. There are many needs to call home, ranging in
importance from 21 Club didn’t start today to Your child is having a medical emergency. We need to have this information.
