Greetings Kaler School families,
What a fabulous first few weeks as Kaler principal. The school is teaming with students taking advantage of an extended school year. I am pleased to be able to meet so many kids before the start of school.
After having met several of you at the informational meeting last spring and reading the on-line survey results, I am pleased to share some of the nuts and bolts of the School Improvement Grant that will be of specific interest to you and your family this year. Parents at the information night were very excited about the additional support for teachers and students! I’d love to know what YOU think about the added supports.
+ This means more time for direct instruction with the classroom teacher
+ This means that students can receive one-on-one and small group support on individualized learning goals for as short or as long as it takes to “catch up.” Transportation will be provided.
+ This means that teachers will be coached on how to best meet your child’s needs based on test results and proven teaching techniques.
+ These experts will not only model and support teachers, but that they will also help develop individual, classroom, and school goals in literacy and math.
+ These experts will be the teachers for the students able to access extra support from 3:30pm – 4:30pm, 3 days weekly.
+ This means teachers will be reviewing and collaborating on student data and best teaching practices to ensure students are moving along on their learning paths.
+ This means that classrooms will be better supported to individualize student learning as well as to cover classroom while teachers are meeting.
+ This means that the new computer program Jump Rope (already used at the middle school level) will provide detailed information to follow your child’s journey toward success in meeting all of the grade level learning targets. Parents can monitor progress as often as daily, if they wish.
Other changes not part of the grant, but made possible due to class size increase, separate federal funding, and scheduling changes include:
I will continue to share with you the exciting changes as the school year begins and schedules are solidified. Staff has already let me know that the Kaler parents are full of energy and wonderful supporters of education. Please feel free to contact me via phone (799 – 3214) or email Hicksbo@spsd.org with your ideas, concerns, or even an introduction throughout the summer.
This is also a shout out hoping to get another parent volunteer for the BLT (Building Leadership Team). This group of highly invested and bright educators is charged with developing/implementing the School Improvement Plan as well as the SIG grant. (No small task!) We meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 3:15 – 5:15 pm. If you are interested and available, please let me know ASAP. FYI: I am planning on vacationing July 29 – August 8.
Enjoy the fabulous weather and time with your children. Know that we (staff, students, parents, and district) are underway in this exciting transformation to move Kaler from good to GREAT!
