Welcome Back !  Hoping your summer was filled with adventure and relaxation.   The new school year promises many opportunities for growth and learning.  September is an exciting month of getting acclimated to new classes, and for some a new school.  I would like to introduce myself as the Anti- Bullying specialist for Appleby School.  I am also the counselor who provides counseling and social skills for special education and 504 students.

Throughout the year, I will be sending you links to websites on various topics.  I will touch on topics such such as making new friends, conflict resolution and school climate activities.  Encouragement and safety are necessary to flourish, thrive and learn.  I will also send you information on the class lessons on Character Education being taught in your children's class.  Family activities will be sent monthly at the beginning of the month which compliment the class lessons for the month.  October is a busy month with the Weeks of Respect and Violence Prevention.  There are week long activities.

Your involvement in reinforcing the Pillars of Character with your child gives them the message that getting along and respecting others is vital to successful life choices and overall sense of accomplishment.  Thanks to all the families who have participated in previous years in completing the family Character Education packets.  The benefits to your child PRICELESS!  The benefits to the overall school climate to Appleby school, AWESOME!  Thank you for partnering up with the Spotswood school District for a  positive school climate.

Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions for activities and information links to be shared with our community.

I look forward to awesome year!

Catherine Glass, SAC

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Katie McMullan to Appleby School as the school psychologist.  Ms McMullan will be working with regular Education Students on a full time basis at Appleby School.  Ms McMullan has been in all the classrooms at Appleby to introduce herself to the students and has met individually with many of the children already.  She has begun running groups such as a girls group, new student groups, Divorce and Loss groups etc.

Please feel free to call her at 732-723-2200 ext 5093

This year we will be focusing on The Pillars of Character at Appleby School.  Ms. McMullan and Ms. Glass will be providing class lessons each month on the desired character traits.  The last two months have focused on Respect and Responsibility.  The Month of December will focus on the Character Trait of Generosity.  Classes will be picking a cause to provide their time giving to those in need.  In addition, students will be acknowledged during morning announcements for extraordinary acts of kindness.  "A Sign of Good Character is Doing the Right Thing When No one is Looking".  A little acknowledgement encourages further acts of "doing the right thing".
