1st Six WeeksCurrent Study Unit is the U.S. Legal System.
In this unit we study the U.S. Constitution including the Bill of Rights including Supreme Court decisions based on these amendments and their effect on the criminal justice system. We also study the Texas Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure which are the criminal law statutes of the state of Texas. This unit gives students an insight to how laws effect our society.
During this study unit students work in groups to research the amendments and related Supreme Court cases and prepare presentations which they share with their class. These projects count the as as major test grades.
At the end of the unit students will take a written unit test to access their knowledge of the information that was covered in this unit..
2nd Six Weeks
Due the amount of information covered in the legal unit it will not be completed until after the beginning of the second six weeks.
After completion of the legal Unit we will begin the Law Enforcement Unit this six weeks. This unit is a study of the duties, responsibilities, operations, requirements and training for the various law enforcement agencies in the local, state and federal levels of government in the United States. During this study unit students will have the opportunity to participate in practical training lessons that are similar to the ones used by law enforcement officers.
3rd Six Weeks
This six weeks will involve the completion of the Law Enforcement Unit. This unit is an extensive unit that requires approximately 9 weeks to cover and therefore overlaps the 2nd and 3rd six weeks. Throughout this unit students will participate in numerous practical exercises, written research assignments and take several written tests on the various subject matter covered in this unit.
4th Six Weeks
This six weeks will begin the Courts Unit. During this unit students will study the operation of the U.S. Federal and Texas State court systems. They will learn how courts function and the role they play in the criminal justice system. As part of this unit students will prepare and participate in mock trials. These exercises will allow the students to gain a first understanding of the workings of a court trial by serving as the attorneys, witnesses and other participants of a real trial.
