Welcome to 8th grade ELA!  This course includes writing, language study, reading, and speaking/listening. We will read, study, and write many different genres such as short story, biography, memoir, poetry, essay, novel, drama, and others. In your writing, you will develop more sophisticated skills, such as using evidence from a variety of sources to support your purpose or conclusion. You will revise, edit, and rewrite compositions; learn to try new genres and writing techniques; and use technology to improve and publish your writing.  

You will be expected to read a lot in this class. Choice reading is encouraged. I want you to find books that truly interest you so that you can find enjoyment in what you read. We will have a 25 book challenge, and I will explain more about that during class. Don't worry you will be able to do it or at least put forth your best effort!

Speaking skills are incorporated into literature units and Socratic seminars. You will have the opportunity to personalize your learning with choice and voice in some of your reading texts and writing topics throughout the school year. Integrating reading and writing across the different content areas is emphasized through the addition of the standards for literacy in social studies, science, and technical subjects.
