Who Are We?

The Sparta Sportsmens Club was founded in the early 50's by a few dedicated sportsmen in the area. The main project was to raise pheasants at the Dwight King farm, south of town. They were released to be hunted in the local area. No club grounds were afforded at that time, so meetings were held in the township building. The club made money by starting the French Fry Stand. At that time the fries were cooked in a tent, peeled by hand, and cooked in gas fryers. Today they are still cooked in gas fryers, but now we no longer go to the County Fair. The Club built a permanate stand on the Fairgrounds in Spartansburg.

The Club now has a clubhouse situated on 89 acres of land, which is located approximately three miles south of Spartansburg, on Sportsman Rd off Route 77. Four trap fields, two skeet fields, an archery range and a rifle range are also located on the property. The trap team is active with shoots held weekly. The archery range is open with targets available from 20-50 yards and shoots are held on the third Sunday of the month from February through September. Indoor archery is shot during the winter months in the heated, main barn. The rifle range is located at the top of the hill past the clubhouse. From covered benches, shooters have target backstops ranging from 25-500 yards. Shooters are asked to refrain from shooting at the range prior to 9:00 AM on Sundays and to remove their targets from the backstop and dispose of properly. Also, shooters are asked not to drive on the grass when the fields are wet. Small plots of grain and cover crops are planted between the rifle range backstops to benefit the wildlife in the area. A well stocked, three acre pond is located next to the rifle range. Currently, a catch and release policy is in place. The Club was  awarded a Monarch Butterfly Watch Way Station status in 2010.
A Youth Conservation Club was started in 2010, with activities planned through the year.

It takes many dedicated people to keep our club and grounds in order. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact any club member, or contacting the Club Secy.
