Lady Spartan Golf History

Grundy Center Lady Spartan Golf has a rich tradition of excellence dating back to their first state appearance in 1970. This history includes 21 state appearances, 28 all-state players, 13 state titles (most by one school in state history) and four state runner-up finishes. These accolades make the Lady Spartan golf program the most storied in state history. The Lady Spartan’s first state title occurred in 1991 and put in motion a decade of dominance that brought six state titles and one runner-up finish. Included in the streak was the history making year of 1997, when Grundy Center became the 1st small school to win the overall state golf title. They repeated the feat again in 1998. The new millennium has done little to slow down the golf juggernaut as the Lady Spartan linksters have added seven more state titles, three runner-up finishes a 3rd, 4th and 5th place finish at state since 2000.

The Lady Spartans have been represented by some of the best players in state history. Tracey Voss started the trend of state place winners and future collegiate players for Grundy Center in 1990. Voss’ two 2nd place finishes, in 1990-91, set the tone for an unusual occurrence at the 1992 state tournament. Voss posted the low score at the state meet, but had not qualified individually, thus denying her an individual state title. However, she managed to lead the Lady Spartans to their 2nd consecutive team title. Sisters have been a big part of the Grundy Center success. Trina and Kylie Dirks are arguably the most accomplished sister act in state history. They played from 1995-2000, and between them claimed 4 individual state titles and 2 runner-up finishes while leading the Lady Spartans to five state titles and one runner-up finish. The Iverson sisters, Sarah and Carla, competed from 1993-1998. During this time the Lady Spartans won three titles and had a runner-up finish. Carla finished 2nd twice and 4th once at the state meet, all three times finishing behind teammate Trina Dirks. The last sister act accounted for the Lady Spartan success during 2002-2007. Katie and Abby Schuller led the way as the Lady Spartans won the 2005 state title. Katie finished state runner-up and Abby 5th individually. Abby led the Lady Spartans to a runner-up finish in 2006 and another state title in 2007 with her third straight all-state performance. Most recently, Jocilyn Onnen finished an illustrious career in 2010 breaking the Lady Spartan career scoring average for four years at 41.9. During her career she claimed an individual state title after three runner-up finishes. Her talents have earned her a scholarship where she has continued her play at the college level as a UNI Panther.

Since 1992 20 players from Grundy Center have gone on to compete at the collegiate level, (the most recent 2014 graduate Hillary Samo to Wartburg). Four Lady Spartans have competed at the Division I level. In addition,Tracey Voss earned All-America status at Simpson College and has been inducted into the Grundy Center and Simpson Sports Hall of Fame for her accomplishments in golf.  Trina Dirks and Carla Iverson recently were inducted into the Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame for their golf accomplishments while in high school and college at UNI.

In 2012, Trina and Kylie Dirks were inducted into the Iowa Golf Coaches Hall of Fame, joining just seven other girls in the history of Iowa to be honored, and becoming the first sisters ever so honored.
