Explorations!

Explorations is an exciting after-school program that offers the students of Helen Morgan an opportunity to explore topics and participate in learning activities not covered in the regular curriculum. Explorations is sponsored by the HMS PTO and is taught by the faculty of Helen Morgan. This program runs three times per year, for six weeks each session. Explorations is a tuition-based program and does not receive any funds from the Sparta Township Board of Education.

Spring 2018
We are proud to offer 16 different courses for our students to explore this spring! Explorations will be held on Wednesdays & Thursdays
(4/25 & 26(Bring Your Child to Work Day), 5/2 &3, 5/9 &10, 5/16 &17, 5/23 &24, 5/30 & 5/31 (5th-grade field trip for Mrs. Garagliano and Caputo's classes is 5/30 and Mrs. LaBell, Ms. Raquet, Mrs. McMahon and Mrs. Sawicki on 5/31)
Each class runs once a week for 6 weeks. Courses will run after school from 3:40-4:40, and pick up will be in the cafeteria. Please remember to complete your registration by sending in $60.00 tuition for each course. Checks should be made out to HMS PTO. Please send your tuition to school with your child in an envelope labeled EXPLORATIONS to complete your registration. Thank you for your support of this program!

    TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD for the Spring Session 2018:
  • Read the descriptions of classes below.
  • Click the link below the class description to register your child.
  • Send in tuition for the class in an envelope labeled Explorations with your child's name, the name of the class, & homeroom teacher. The tuition for each Explorations course is $60.00 (unless otherwise noted).
  • Only register your child for one class per day. Multiple registrations for the same child on the same day will be considered void. Thank you for your cooperation.
  • Registration will close Tuesday, April 17th.
Wednesday Courses -

Stem Challenge with Ms. Benson-
Come try the STEM Challenge, as we use teamwork to help build, create, and attempt various team building challenges. Some creations you might participate in are creating bucket towers, building bridges, making marble runs, and other fun creations. Click here to register for STEM Challenge!

3-D Printing with Mrs. Bernardo-

Do you like building? Like being creative? Do yo find manipulating numbers and shapes to be a passion of yours? Become a 3D printer engineer and use geometry and measurement skills among others while creating a variety of objects to print on our Dremel 3D printer. Students will design a project for themselves, their homes and around the building to solve a school problem.

*Students enrolling in this course must sign up for an account on tinkercad.com with a parent. Students must bring username and password to first class. (12 max)

Math Games with Mrs. Verhalen-

Join Mrs. Verhalen for some fun math games in room 7. There will be some old favorites like SNAKE and Shut the Box, and some brand new games as well. Be prepared...these games can get a little competitive and you never know when there will be prizes for the winners! Click here to register for Math Games


Arts and Crafts Makerspace with Mrs. Rudolph-

Come join a creative, DIY and DIT (do it together) space where you can gather with your friends to create, invent, and learn in hands-on-ways. You will be encouraged to design, experiment, and build creative art projects using your own ideas, interests, and inspiration. We will work through the process involved in making by tinkering, problem-solving, and play with a variety of materials and tools. The result will be truly unique artwork, planned, designed, and created by you!

Kickball with Miss Spence and Miss Faisca-

Join us after school for multiple games of kickball with your friends. We will be playing on the outside field, so grab a friend, and get ready for some fun!

Tumbling with Mrs. Jennings-

Come flip around with us!  Kids will have some tumbling fun.  Work on cartwheels, bridges, round-offs, flexibility and more.  Each week the class will practice new skills and put together a routine to showcase our new abilities.  Great fun for beginners and beyond!

Lego Robotics with Mr. Layman-
Build, Program, Compete! Learn how to program a Lego Mindstorm Robot that your team will construct and pilot through a series of challenges. All levels of experience (or inexperience) are welcome. (Max 15)

Thursday Courses:

WOOD CREATIONS with Mrs. Milligan

What kind of wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck

could chuck wood? Who knows!!! You might not like to chuck

wood but be interested in wooden projects. Create small toys,

picture frames, trinket boxes and more. All you need for

experience is your creativity. A $10 material fee is needed along with your sign up fee.(12 max)

Learning through Logic with Ms. Raquet-

If you are looking for a fun way to stretch your thinking and challenge your mind, then Learning through Logic is the exploration for you!  This class will explore some tips and tricks to solving famous logic puzzles such as Sudoku and Slitherlink. You will even have the opportunity to create your own logic puzzles to challenge your family and friends! Click here to register for Learning through Logic



Crime Scene Investigation with Ms. Benson-
Come try CSI, as we attempt to search for fingerprints, look for clues, and solve crimes!


Double the Robotic Fun with Mrs. Bernardo-
Learn to code with colors and our new Ozobots! Draw OzoCode codes on paper or a tablet and Ozobots will use optical sensors to respond- spinning, speeding up and more at your command. Explore OzoCode games and activities online and with the Ozobot app. Learn to code with imagination! Learn how to use our new pre-programmed Cubelets to create robots. These cubes will snap together and with your creativity, ideas are endless. Find out how they work and start inventing robots with a purpose! For this course, there will be no May 3rd class.

Knitting with Mrs. Shuppon -

Beginners: This new course will take the beginner knitter through the basics of knitting. You will learn how to choose the right yarn and needles, cast on, knit, and bind off to create your very own, one-of-a-kind project.  

Returning knitters:  You will learn how to purl and follow a pattern.  Once you have learned this, it is quite possible that you will be able to start knitting your own project!



Biking with Mrs. Jennings - Bring your bike and helmet and get ready to ride! Each week we will create fun bike courses for kids to ride and build endurance. The course will include bicycle safety, endurance building, races, and relays. Ride with friends and meet some new friends while biking.

Every effort will be made to get outdoors but, in the event of inclement weather, the bike club will be discussing the challenges to cycling (i.e. bad roads, no space, unhealthy air, etc.) and brainstorm solutions and make a plan of action to make changes around Sparta. In addition, students will research great local places to ride and share with others in the school community. 

Students participating must be able to ride a bicycle on their own without training wheels.

HMS Philharmonic with Mrs. Curtis and Miss Angderson-

The HMS Philharmonic is a combined band and orchestra group.  If you play a band or strings instrument, come join Mrs. Curtis and Miss Angderson on a musical adventure and explore the exciting and epic sounds of a combined instrumental group!
