Explorations is an exciting after school program that offers the students of Helen Morgan an opportunity to explore topics and participate in learning activities not covered in the regular curriculum. Explorations is sponsored by the HMS PTO and is taught by the faculty of Helen Morgan. This program runs three times per year, for six weeks each session. Explorations is a tuition-based program and does not receive any funds from the Sparta Township Board of Education.

MinecraftEdu with Mrs. Bandel & Mrs. Church
Introduction to LEGO Robotics with Mr. Layman
Build a LEGO Mindstorm robot and learn how to program it to accomplish specific tasks and compete against other teams. No experience necessary! (limited to 16 students)
Act, Imagine, Have Fun! with Mrs. Steel
This course will use your imagination and creativity to act out short plays and skits. We will transform simple tales for a fun twist. Acting games and making props will also be a part of the fun. (limited to 10 students)
Competitive Fun and Games with Mr. Parlapiano and Mrs. Milligan
Come join us for a fast-paced, high energy, competitive experience of some of your favorite PE games. Games will include Gaga, 4 Square, Guard the Pin, Knockout and much more. This section will take place outside. (limited to 20 students)

Bicycle Buddies with Mrs. Jennings -
Every effort will be made to get outdoors but, in the event of inclement weather, the bike club will be discussing the challenges to cycling (i.e. bad roads, no space, unhealthy air, etc.) and brainstorm solutions and make a plan of action to make changes around Sparta. In addition, students will research great local places to ride and share with others in the school community.
Students participating must be able to ride a bicycle on their own without training wheels.(limited to 10 students)
Make Your Mark and Pull Your Print with Mrs. Kratina
Make relief prints by creating a raised design on a flat surface. The design is inked and transferred to paper. Learn to use carving tools, experiment with colored inks and different papers. You will have a stack of beautiful prints in no time! (Limited to 10 students)
Harry Potterpalooza with Professor Bleakley

Love Harry Potter and the Wizarding World? Come join Hogwarts Americana at HMS! Level 1 & 2 wizards welcome. Students will be sorted into houses, play trivia games to earn house points, attend traditional Hogwarts classes including Charms, Potions & Care of Magical Creatures. Young wizards will use teamwork to search for Horcruxes. Do you have what it takes to make it at Hogwarts Americana? Muggles need not apply. Limited to 16 wizards.

Adventures in Mindfulness with Mrs. Caputo
Looking for a life that you have more control over? How about one that is less stressful and free from mind-clutter? Adventures in Mindfulness will help you develop mindful attributes like attention, compassion, and well-being. Practice and learn simple and effective tips, techniques and guided exercises to develop the tools needed to create a calmer and clearer way of going through your day, in or out of school. (Limited to 10 students)
CSI - Crime Scene Investigations with Mrs. Benson
Are you ready to be a Super Sleuth and solve the mystery? Come join us for a CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) course, as we will be learning to use our crime detection skills as we find fingerprints, make observations, solve mysteries, use paper chromatography, solve brainteasers, and more.
Nature Walks with Mrs. Curtis
Explore the HMS nature walk and butterfly garden for birds, bugs, wildflowers, and more! The course will include how to create your own wildlife preserve at home. Learn how to identify local wildlife, and make some new friends while hiking.
Long pants and good walking shoes are recommended for the trail. Except for extreme inclement weather, be prepared to be outside each session with a raincoat if necessary. Feel free to bring a pair of binoculars!
Please note that due to the band concert on April 12, this course will run April 26 - May 31.
Mystery Skype with Mrs. Bernardo
Mystery Skype is a 45-60 minute critical thinking challenge that our class will take part in while Skyping with another class somewhere else in the world. Our goal is to guess the other school's location (country, state, city, school name) before they guess our location. We do this by asking yes and no questions. Sometimes there might not be a class, but a professional who will then bring us on a virtual field trip! Come join in the fun! NOTE - This class will not be held on May 24, the make-session will be May 31

LEARN TO KNIT with Mrs. Shuppon (Tuesdays)
This new course will take the beginner knitter through the basics of knitting. You will learn how to choose the right yarn and needles, cast on, knit, and bind off to create your very own, one-of-a-kind project.
Returning knitters: You will learn how to purl and follow a pattern. Once you have learned this, it is quite possible that you will be able to start knitting your own hat!
Supplies to get you started will be available.
MinecraftEdu with Mrs. Bandel and Mrs. Church (Tuesdays)
MinecraftEdu is the Explorations class for you! Through game based learning, all who join will have an adventure while creating and sharing content, play while building friendships, learn through a variety of "Game Worlds". Students will become "learning designers" as we navigate through a diverse number of quests. Through our Exploration class, we will learn different "crafting recipes" so the beginner to the expert will all learn something new. We will discuss digital citizenship and how to be safe while gaming! The class is open to 20 creative, adventure seeking students!
Abracadabra - It's Magic!! with Mrs. Hart (Tuesdays)
Are you interested in magic? Do you know any magic tricks? Explore the history of magic. Come to Winter Explorations and learn several magic tricks using objects, cards, numbers, and paper. Become a budding magician. Share some tricks and amaze your family and friends. Remember - you don't have to tell them the secrets if you don't want to! Tricks will include, but will not be limited to, Color Cube ESP, Ring and Beads, Vanishing Handkerchief, The Card Hotel, Pencil/Circle Trick, and Folded Money. This session will meet on Tuesdays. Come try out a basic course in coding with your friends and Mrs. Zoeller. Not only will we code, but we will try some hands on activities to understand how coding works. Limit 10

Fun with Flowers with Mrs. Pitzer (Wednesdays)
Students will have fun learning to create different flower arrangements. We will make corsages (including how to make a bow from ribbon), flower crowns, vase arrangements, arrangements in foam and more. Flowers will be provided with the class. There is an additonal materials fee of $15.00 per student for this course.
