Welcome to our website and thank you for your interest in Animal Rights Alliance!
We are a student organization at the University of South Alabama. Our purpose is to be advocates on campus for animals and to show that animals' lives are valuable, and they are worthy of living a life free from unnecessary harm or cruelty. Animal rights is defined as "the idea in which all non-human animals are entitled to the possession of their own lives and that their most basic interests—such as the need to avoid suffering—should be afforded the same consideration as similar interests of human beings." We believe animals' lives and bodies belong to them, just like our own lives and bodies belong to us. What claim do we have to another's body and life?
We have several meetings each semester and schedule activities and events consistently, averaging about 3 events per semester. Some of the events we've held in the past include the following: fundraising for animal rescue organizations, pet food drives, garnering signatures on animal rights petitions, hosting informational speakers on campus, giving out free vegan food, chalking positive animal rights messages on sidewalks across campus, leafleting, setting up themed tables and providing animal rights information, tailgating at South football games, providing virtual reality headsets where students can view life from an animal's perspective, hosting documentary screenings, working with Dining Services to provide more vegan friendly food options on campus, and more.
Animal rights starts with kindness and compassion for all living beings, not just our pets. We believe that every animal, regardless of their intellectual or physical capabilities, is deserving of the right to live a life free from harm and suffering. We advocate for all animals, including, but not limited to the ones who are deemed by society the cutest and most cuddly.
Animals farmed for food (pigs, cows, chickens, turkeys, fish, and others) are the animals who people often don't see as animals under certain conditions. They are farmed for food and are often treated like inanimate objects. It is our goal to show our campus community and beyond that these animals are living, sentient beings who feel the same emotions that we and our companion animals do--sadness, happiness, pain, suffering, love, fear.
Compassion is what animal rights is rooted in--compassion for all living beings. If you believe that all sentient beings deserve a life free from suffering, then you already have the mindset of an animal activist. We do not promote harassment or hate of those whose views differ from ours. Rather, because animal rights is rooted in compassion, that is the place from which our activism comes.
We want to promote peace, love, and compassion for both humans and animals within our college community. If we can all learn to appreciate life and understand that all beings' lives and bodies belong to them and no one else, then we believe the world could be a much more peaceful place for us all. This is a message that spans across ideologies and activist groups, and animal activism is no different in that way.
