Elementary Music Syllabus
Welcome to Music Class! I am looking forward to getting to know and working with each one of you this year! Whether you have had any music experience or not, you are going to learn a lot about music this year, and of course, we will have fun!
For lower elementary:
In music, students will learn simple music concepts, such as how to keep a beat, high and low sounds, etc. Concepts will be conveyed with singing, dancing, and playing simple percussion instruments. Later, students begin to learn more complex music concepts, including simple music theory. Emphasis is on melody and rhythm, learned through clapping, singing, dancing, use of small percussion instruments, and some writing and reading of music.
For upper elementary:
Elementary students will get a wide overview of subjects such as music theory, music history, sight-singing and will gain first-hand knowledge of music concepts through playing a simple instrument. Dance may also be occasionally included for rhythm-training and cultural purposes.
The school-wide rules covered in the student handbook will also be used in music class. There are also a few more rules specific for music class:
90-100% - A
80-89% - B
70-79% - C
65-69% - D
64% or lower – F
Participation is 100% of the grading in elementary music. Each student begins each class with 10 participation points.
When classroom and/or school rules are broken, these are the following steps I will take:
1. Verbal Warning
2. Each time after the warning, I will take away one point from the days 10 participation points.
3. When a student goes to 6 points, the next step is a zero for the day, as well as parent contact.
4. Office referral
**DPS points can be given at any time.
I expect each student to come to class ready to learn and to put forth his or her best effort each day. That is the key to success in this class!
