Company Bio

The Special Dance Company of Columbia High School is comprised of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are chosen through a selective audition process. Under the direction of Kandice N. Point-Du-Jour they study modern dance technique, improvisation, choreography, and dance history. Each year the Company is proud to give the Janet Hicks (founder 1971) Scholarship to a senior pursuing dance or a related field in the arts. This year, the Company is celebrating 45 years!

Graduates of Columbia High School Special Dance Company have majored in dance, become dance educators, performed on cruise lines, toured with professional dance companies, and our very own Daisy Hobbs, a recipient of the Janet Hicks Scholarship, is now on Broadway performing in Aladdin. Although the company’s annual performance is held in May, the company also performs throughout the year and attends various field trips and master classes. Performance credits include: NJ Performing Arts Center, Two River Theater, Essex County Metro West Dance Festival, Teen Arts Festival, National High School Dance Festival, NJ High School Dance Festival, Dance Gala for NJ and Eastern District, Pulse on Tour, and the SO-M Community.

We are proud to say that our current company members are on this same track to success. This past March, Maddie Cidlik’s original piece, entitled Misconceptions, was selected to be performed at the National High School Dance Festival in Pittsburg. In addition, company members Sally Carnevale and Kayla Fleming have received summer dance scholarships at Rutgers University and Ballet Forte. The Company held its second Columbia Dance Day for grades K-5 this past April. Company members taught classes and students presented what they learned in the CHS auditorium.
