TRANSITION EDUCATION


Sommerville has developed a curriculum for students who are 16 years and over with a focus on the skills and activities that prepare them for living in the community. The curriculum at this level continues to embrace the Key Competency areas of Thinking, Relating to Others, Understanding Language Symbols and Text, Managing Self, and Participating and Contributing. It endeavours to create learning opportunities in more age appropriate activities that are aimed at creating independent young men and women in the areas of Functional literacy and maths, Life skills, Vocational skills, Leisure skills and general community functioning.

In the year that students turn 21 years of age (their last legal age to attend school), Sommerville works closely with an external transition provider to locate suitable programmes for these young adults to enter into when they graduate.
