WTO Membership

There are 159 members of the WTO as of Tajikistan's March 2, 2013 WTO accession. Other recent entrants include Laos (February 2013) and Russia and Vanuatu (both in August 2012).Yemen will be next in 2014. It was approved for accession at the Bali Ministerial Conference in December 2013. Yemen will become a WTO member 30 days after its domestic ratification of the WTO accession documents. (See sources at the bottom of this page.)

WTO members' trade accounts for the overwhelming majority of world trade. Below is a list of members with their dates of entry and a list of observers. January 1, 1995 indicates a country is a founding WTO member and thus a member of the GATT (which dates to 1947). The country names are hyperlinks to the WTO website with more information on the given country. All observers on the list, with exception of the Holy See (the Vatican), are at various stages of accession to become WTO members. This can be a long and arduous road, but the main determinant of entry is the acceding country's willingness to open its economy. Only a handful of countries outside the WTO are not trying to join (E.g. Eritrea, Somalia, and Turkmenistan).
