Courses and workshops are held at school sites in St. Mary's County. SMCPS staff can log in to the SMCPS Professional Development Portal (PMPD) to access course listings. All others can view available can click here to view SMCPS course offerings.
Courses mandated by the state are offered once per year:
Reading Regulations Part I
Twelve hours of the following reading courses are required for Early Childhood, Elementary 1-6 & Middle School, and Special Education Teachers at those levels:
Processes and Acquisition of Reading (3 credits) usually offered in the fall
Instruction in Reading (3 credits) usually offered in the spring
Materials for Teaching Reading (3 credits) usually offered in the spring
Assessment for Reading Instruction (3 credits) usually offered in the fall
Reading Regulations Part II
Six hours of the following reading courses are required for Secondary, N-12/K-12, and Special Education Teachers at those levels:
Literacy in the Content Areas, Part I (formerly Teaching Reading in the Secondary Content Areas, Part I) (3 credits) usually offered in the fall
Literacy in the Content Areas, Part II (formerly Teaching Reading in the Secondary Content Areas, Part II )(3 credits) usually offered in the spring

The M.S. in Curriculum & Instruction with a Leadership Focus is a 34.5 credit program that helps educators to increase their knowledge and skills in developing, implementing, and evaluating curriculum and in engaging the educational community in these efforts. Current theories, research, and technology are applied to the improvement of the learning process at all levels. McDaniel’s Administrator I MSDE Endorsement is a 19 credit course sequence designed for educators already holding a Master’s Degree and aspiring for careers in Administration or Supervision. Upon successful completion of the sequence, you will have met the Maryland requirements for the Administrator I Certificate.
