BIOLOGY

Grade Level: 9-12 Length: 1 year

UC Requirement Fulfilled: d

Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Math 1A, 1B or Math 2

Course Description: This course is designed for students with strong academic skills. Topics of study include an introduction into scientific methodology and practice, ecology, basic chemistry, cell structure, genetics, evolution, recombinant DNA technology, and plant and animal anatomy and physiology. There will be considerable lab work as well as lecture.

CONCEPTUAL CHEMISTRY

Grade Level: 9-12 Length: 1 year

UC Requirement Fulfillment: d

Prerequisite: Completion of Biology and a “B” or higher in previous math class

Course Description: This course introduces students to chemistry through the study of matter and energy and continues with elements and compounds, and different types of reactions. Other topics covered include molecular formulas, molar relationships, bonding the geometry of molecules, and types and properties of solutions. The purpose of this course is to provide the students with a broad exposure to chemistry for college-bound, non-science majors. The course will be less mathematically oriented than the traditional Chemistry course

CHEMISTRY

Grade Level: 10-12 Length: 1 year

UC Requirement Fulfillment: d

Prerequisite: Completion of Math 1A, and 1B or with a grade of “B” or better, concurrent enrollment in Math 2, and successful completion of Biology with a grade of “B” or better.

Course Description: This course is designed to teach students about interactions of matter and chemical laws and theories through demonstrations, lectures, student laboratory experiments and problem solutions. Students study atomic theory, kinetic theory, atomic structure, and principles of chemistry.

ENVIRONMENTAL & HORTICULTURE STUDIES 1

Grade level: 9-12 Length: 1 year

UC Requirement Fulfilled: d

Prerequisite: Biology, and concurrent enrollment in Math 1B, Math 2

Course Description: This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills required for entry into environmental and horticulture fields. It encompasses planning, design, construction, and management of the urban landscape. Relevant topics include ecosystem restoration and management, landscape ecology, sustainable landscape management, sustainable use of natural resources, urban horticulture, and urban landscape design. Emphasis will be on ecology, plant identification, plant propagation, water conservation, and related cultural practices.  An important aim of this course is to develop in the student an appreciation of horticulture in the environment. This second tier level of Environmental Horticulture 2 opens the opportunity for the student to participate in a 3rd year Environmental Horticulture Internship.

ENVIRONMENTAL & HORTICULTURE 2

Grade level:11-12 Length: 1 year

UC Requirement Fulfilled:

Prerequisite: Completion of Biology and Environmental Horticulture Studies 1

Course Description: This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills required for tier two entry into environmental and horticulture fields. Environmental Horticulture Studies 2 builds on the previous year’s course in regards to the planning, design, construction, and management of the urban landscape. Relevant topics continue to include ecosystem restoration and management, landscape ecology, sustainable landscape management, sustainable use of natural resources, urban horticulture, and urban landscape design. An important aim of this course is to continue developing in the student an appreciation of horticulture in their environment. This second tier level of Environmental Horticulture 2 opens the opportunity for the student to participate in a 3rd year Environmental Horticulture Internship.

MARINE SCIENCE

Grade level: 10-12 Length: 1 year

UC Requirement Fulfilled: g

Prerequisite: Completion of Integrated Earth Science, Biology and/or one other year of a science. This course may be applied as a third year elective science.

Course Description: This is an exciting marine science course. Marine Science applies and connects such science disciplines as geology, astronomy, meteorology, and ecology to understand the oceanic portion of the planet. This course is designed to engage students in scientific investigations of the marine environment. Areas of concentration include physical oceanography, marine biology, and applied marine ecology. An emphasis is placed on technology, research and presentation.

 PHYSICS

Grade Level: 10-12 Length: 1 year

UC Requirement Fulfillment: d

Prerequisite: Completion of Math 1A, and 1B or with a grade of “B” or better, concurrent enrollment in Math 2, and successful completion of Biology, Chemistry, and/or Environmental & Horticulture Studies with a grade of “B” or better.

Course Description: This course is designed for the 4-year college bound student with a solid math background who has a desire to learn more about mechanics, energy, heat, sound, light, magnetism, electricity, electronics, and nuclear action. This course prepares students for careers in science, engineering, technology, medicine, and teaching. It is designed as a 2nd or 3rd year college prep course. This course is delivered via the online program Edgenuity© and all labs and assessments are proctored by credentialed teachers.

BOTANY/HORTICULTURE

Grade Level: 9-12 Length: 1 year

Prerequisite(s): Entry level science

UC Requirement Fulfilled: none

Course Description: This course satisfies one year of the three-year science graduation requirement. It is a study devoted to a branch of biology dealing with plant life. Students study and/or grow various plant specimens. Relevant topics include ecosystem restoration and management, landscape ecology, sustainable landscape management, sustainable use of natural resources, urban horticulture, and urban landscape design.

ENVIRONMENTAL & HORTICULTURE 2

Grade level:11-12 Length: 1 year

UC Requirement Fulfilled: none

Prerequisite: Completion of Biology and Environmental Horticulture Studies 1

Course Description: This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills required for tier two entry into environmental and horticulture fields.
