Welcome to the academic homepage of
J. A. Wayne Hellmann
Professor of Theological Studies
Saint Louis University
I grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana, the oldest of seven siblings and therefore blessed with a close family, now with many in-laws, nieces and nephews. This positive experience made my move into the Franciscan fraternity a natural development, expanding my family experience round the globe. The number of my frequent flyer miles remains, however, top secret.
Immediately upon completion of my studies in Rome, and "Doktor der Theologie" in München, I began my teaching career at SLU. Over the course of many years, I have taught more courses in more subjects than I can count. These years were interrupted by a six year stint as Minister Provincial of my Franciscan province.
In more recent years my colleagues requested my service as Director of Graduate Studies (1999-2005) and Chair (2005-2011). Nevertheless, I have luckily been able to find time to continue work with graduate students and pursue my long time interest in Franciscan texts and tradition.
