On behalf of the Student Orientation Committee, we would like to congratulate you on your acceptance to Saint Louis University School of Medicine. We have planned a full week of activities to help you feel more comfortable in your new environment. This week will you give you the opportunity to get to know your classmates, meet some members of the faculty, explore parts of St. Louis and have fun in the process. We encourage you to arrive in St. Louis early enough to find housing so that you will be able to participate in and enjoy orientation.Housing information is available on our Housing Website. This reflects information that has also been put up on your Facebook page.
Orientation activities begin with the Welcome Week Banquet for the Class of 2019 on Saturday, August 1 from 6 to 9 pm at a location to be determined. Please join your fellow classmates, current medical students, and faculty in celebrating the beginning of your medical career! This will be a fun night of food, mingling, and an introduction to SLU's student-run free health clinic, the Health Resource Center. Dress is business casual and everyone is invited, so bring your families, significant others, and anyone else who would like to come. Tickets are $25 and all proceeds will go directly to the Health Resource Center clinic. Welcome Week Banquet flyer will be available soon that will provide specific information and payment information. Hope to see you all there!
The White Coat Ceremony, sponsored by the School of Medicine and the Medical Alumni Association, will be held on Sunday, August 2 at St. Francis Xavier College Church (Building 51 on the campus map). Entering students will be “cloaked” with their first clinical white coats, the symbol of the medical profession. The ceremony is meant to foster professionalism and humanism in medicine. Parents, spouses, and family are invited to attend! The ceremony begins at 1:30 pm, but all entering students need to get to the Church by noon to be fitted for their white coat and have their "Official School of Medicine" picture taken. Sign up for orientation week events will be available. Tell your family and friends about this very special occasion; the beginning of your career in the medical profession. Parents or close family who are “Physicians” may cloak their own family member student, so tell them this ahead of time - we'll give you instructions at the ceremony.
Convocation itself begins on Monday, August 3 at 8:30 am in the Education Union on the medical campus (Medical Center Map, #12). Please park (free this week) in the Hickory East Garage, 1214 S Theresa Avenue across from the Education Union. For this day, the appropriate attire is “nice casual”; wear comfortable shoes as the activities of the day require a lot of walking. You will be registered, get your medical school I.D. card, be given an introduction to the school, and receive health insurance information. A luncheon is also planned that day. The rest of the week will be casual (shorts, T‑shirts, etc.) and will provide a variety of other information about medical school life and the curriculum, and financial aid. It will offer some great social events and activities in the afternoons and evenings, all to acquaint you with your new environment and your fellow colleagues. Please check the Preliminary Orientation Week Schedule and Orientation Week at a Glance Schedule using the Navigation link on the Left to get a general idea of the week’s activities. Some social events are free and others have nominal costs for tickets and/or transportation. A survey asking about your interest in attending these events is again on the left-side Navigation link. Please complete the survey so we can best prepare for the number of students who wish to attend these events.
University Campus Maps will be included in your admissions packet, and printable versions can also be found on our website at www.slu.edu/campusmap.
Please check out ALL of the Navigation links on the left to become familiar with the events and schedules of Orientation Welcome Week and learn a bit about our city. Friday of Orientation Week is our Service Day. Small groups of first year students led by sophomore group leaders will be sent to a variety of locations in the city to participate in a few hours of service to the community. It is your first chance to "Give Back" to areas of our community which are most in need of your services. Students have found this a wonderful opportunity to become "involved"!
