GOAL STATEMENT : The Saint Louis University/SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital Palliative Care (HPM) Program is dedicated to improve quality of life for patients and families living with serious illness at any stage of the illness by providing compassionate medical care, emotional, spiritual and social support and by teaching health professionals excellence in palliative medicine.

 Purpose & vision:

1.      To enhance the care for patients and families living with serious illness with a focus on providing relief from symptoms and distress.

2.      To encourage research, reflection and experiential learning for healthcare professionals in compassionate palliative care in alignment with the vision of SSM & SLUCare.

 Functions:

1.      To offer interdisciplinary team-based specialized care for patients and families with serious illnesses, including,

    •  managing complex pain and symptoms;
    •  time devoted to intensive family meetings;
    •  help with advance care planning; and coordination of care in partnership with the clinical team.

2.      To educate communities, hospital staff, medical students and residents in the importance of PC in life-limiting illness so that they become supporters of this service.
