I study American environmental history, the history of the American West, the history of gender and sexuality, and history education.  My research seeks to understand the relationship between geographic places and human identities and experiences.  In my teaching, I aim to give students of all levels the tools to engage in lifelong historical learning as scholars, teachers, and citizens.
